FOREPI selects its first AIXTRON G5 system for blue LEDs

AIXTRON AG announced that in the second quarter of 2010, Formosa Epitaxy Inc. (FOREPI), placed an order for a 56x2-inch AIX G5 HT MOCVD reactor which will be used for ultra-high brightness (UHB) GaN-based LEDs. Planned to be shipped in the fourth quarter of 2010 it will join FOREPI’s multiple high throughput Planetary Reactor systems at the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Lung-Tan, Taoyuan, Taiwan.

Epistar developed 168 lm/W for red-emitting AlGaInP LED chips

LED chip maker Epistar had successfully developed a record efficacy of 168 lm/W for red-emitting AlGaInP LED chips in their lab. The small-area LED chips measure 14x14 mil (0.36 x 0.36 mm), and have an efficacy of 180 lm/W at 6mA. The red LED chips have a horizontal structure to satisfy chip-on-board (COB) packages for lighting applications which require multiple chips mounted in series on non-conductive substrates.

New Nanotechnology Center chooses AIXTRON Black Magic

AIXTRON AG announced an order from ETH Zurich for a Black Magic Plasma Enhanced CVD system to be installed at the Nanotechnology Center in Ruschlikon, Switzerland. The Nanotechnology Center is a unique, public private partnership between IBM Research and ETH Zurich. The new system, used for single wall carbon nanotube deposition, is 6-inch in configuration and will be commissioned by the local AIXTRON support team in the first quarter of 2011.

LED North America plans to cool LED light with graphite foam

LED North America has acquired a new technology that extends the life of light-emitting diode lamps from DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The firm plans to use the graphite foam to passively cool components in LED lamps. Cooling LED lamps is critical to increasing their efficiency, considering that each 10-degree decrease in temperature can double the life of the lighting components.

SETI makes breakthrough in single chip germicidal UV LED

Sensor Electronic Technology, Inc. (SETI) has shifted the power of UV LEDs operating in the germicidal wavelength range from 30 mW up to 100 mW. At present, this level of single chip performance is not yet available in SETI's production LEDs, high power UV LED lamps are available under the UVCLEAN® trademark with germicidal powers up to 50 mW.

AIXTRON AG today signed a contract with Sanan Optoelectronics Co. Ltd., on the supply of a double digit number of multiple CRIUS® II and AIX G5 MOCVD systems. The AIXTRON new generation MOCVD systems will be delivered between the fourth quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 and installed at Sanan’s new manufacturing facilities in Wuhu, Anhui, China. Earlier this year Sanan had announced their plans to invest into China’s largest LED manufacturing and research centre capable of operating up to 200 MOCVD systems.

According to a document from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to the APEC regional audience, the Korean innovation plan for LED had made a success that the next generation InGaN blue light's efficiency was increased by 30 percent. The University of Strathclyde exploits micro-LED arrays

Led by Braveheart Investment Group, the Strathclyde Innovation Fund and the Alpha EIS Fund has invested £150,000 to exploit micro-LED arrays developed at its Institute of Photonics. Scottish Enterprise's Scottish Seed Fund also joined them.   The arrays begin as a single large LED structure. MicroLEDs from 2 to 100µm across have been made.

AIXTRON AG today announced a multiple tool order from Sanan OptoElectronics Co. Ltd., headquartered in Xiamen, China. The Sanan order for multiple CRIUS® 31x2 inch tools was placed at the end of 2009. The local AIXTRON support team has successfully commissioned the new HB GaN LED growth reactors at Sanan’s new purpose-built facility in Tianjin in the first two quarters of 2010.

Xi An Zoomlight (ZoomView) orders AIXTRON CRIUS MOCVD systems for GaN HB-LED production

AIXTRON AG announced today a new order from an existing customer in China. The order is for two CRIUS production deposition systems in a 31x2 inch configuration. LED manufacturer Xi An ZoomView placed the order in the fourth quarter of 2009, and will use both reactors for GaN HB-LED production. The systems will be delivered over the second to third quarter period of 2010 with the local AIXTRON support team installing and commissioning the new reactors at the company’s new production facility.
