Ford Motor Company is ensuring consumers continue to ‘think Ford first’ by offering industry first technology on the completely redesigned 2015 Ford F-150, part of Ford F-Series, America’s best-selling pickup truck. The next-generation F-150, which debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, is the first to feature a complete LED forward lighting solution, thanks in part to OSRAM Automotive Lighting.
A key performance and styling differentiator, the innovative LED lighting system is comprised of a low beam, high beam, light driver module, turn module and park module. OSRAM worked closely with Tier 1 supplier Flex-N-Gate to help the automaker achieve a completely new front-end appearance and optic design. The LED headlamps deliver a unique, strong and powerful look that compliments the commanding design of the entire vehicle.
“Sophisticated technology advancements at OSRAM make it possible for us to work closely with Flex-N-Gate and Ford to provide a full LED forward lighting solution that met their design needs and that was essentially ‘Built Ford Tough,’” said David Hulick, global senior marketing director, Specialty Solid State Lighting, OSRAM SYLVANIA. “Not only did this new technology offer Ford an opportunity to redesign the vehicle’s front end, it is also an extremely durable system that is expected to last the vehicle’s lifespan. This provides reliability directly to consumers.”
The new OSRAM LED systems feature components from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and are being assembled in Hillsboro, N.H., helping to reinforce the Ford F-150’s standing as one of the most American-made vehicles.
“We are making significant investments at our Hillsboro manufacturing facility to support this project and training our local employees to produce the future of automotive lighting. Bringing such cutting-edge lighting innovation to one of the most iconic vehicles on the road today is generating a lot of pride in our factory,” said Hulick.
OSRAM Opto Semiconductors also supplied Thinfilm LED light sources for the class-leading LED taillights. LEDs facilitate unique designs, as featured on the new truck, with lines that match the contour of the vehicle while providing a signature look.
Higher performance is another consumer benefit as LEDs deliver performance unmatched by traditional halogen technologies. New LED products and technologies from OSRAM insure the lights are robust, long lasting and have high light output. Both LED systems are highly resistant to shock and vibration. Due to their unique light emitting characteristics, their use improves optical efficiency of the headlight system. The LED headlights draw significantly less power than other automotive lighting technologies, and the color of the LED light is close to natural daylight.
“Many F-150 drivers work in construction and are on the road early mornings and late into the night,” said Hulick. “Having clear visibility on the road is crucial for them, which is why this LED lighting technology is important for Ford’s customers.”
