DOE Releases Lighting Alternatives Maximizing Performance & Suitability (LAMPS) Funding Opportunity

The U.S. Department of Energy's Building Technologies Office Emerging Technologies (ET) program is announcing the availability of up to $3 million in funding to develop energy efficient replacement lamps in general illumination applications. The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 set a 45 lumen per watt minimum efficacy backstop requirement effective beginning January 1, 2020. ET's Lighting Alternatives Maximizing Performance and Suitability (LAMPS) program seeks to create suitable high-efficacy lighting options for incandescent lamps where none exist today.

DOE will select projects that seek to develop suitable replacement lamps that meet or exceed the 45 lm/W backstop requirement for one or more incandescent general service lamp categories and that maintain the base, shape, and lumen output of the incandescent lamps they are designed to replace. Any lighting technology that meets the FOA requirements will be considered.

The objectives of this funding opportunity are to:

  • Accelerate development of replacement lamps that maintain the needed performance attributes of the incandescent lamps they replace while eliminating or minimizing any performance compromises

  • Overcome technical challenges that inhibit widespread market acceptance and impede the design, development and future sale of suitable and compliant lighting products for the identified general service lamp categories

  • Offer consumer choice

There are three topic areas of interest:

  • Topic Area 1:  MR16 Replacement Lamp Product Development

  • Topic Area 2:  Candelabra (E12) Base Replacement Lamp Product Development

  • Topic Area 3:  OPEN Replacement Lamp Product Development
