As they prepared to launch their latest tour, longtime tour lighting designer Howard Ungerleider of Production Design International in Toronto was once again charged with creating the lighting spectacle that would be seen by the multitude of sold-out houses. Toshiba Introduces New CMOS Image Sensor for Automotive Mitigates LED Flicker

Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced that it has developed a new 2-megapixel (MP) CMOS image sensor for automotive cameras, “CSA02M00PB”, equipped with the industry’s first*1 LED flicker mitigation function. GLA Releases Position Statement on CRI

The Global Lighting Association (GLA) cautions against the establishment of regulatory or other minimum performance requirements for a colour rendering index (Ra) of greater than 80 for indoor lighting applications. For Europe, the GLA supports retention of legal minimum requirements on colour rendering (Ra) at the current level as defined in the EU Eco-design Regulations (EC 244/2009, EC 245/2009, EC 1194/2012). In the United States, the GLA supports the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program’s current minimum requirement of 80 CRI.

Osram Launches Brightness Improved LED Chips for Stage Spotlight Application

Osram Opto Semiconductors has expanded the product portfolio of its Osram Ostar Stage family. The four chips of the new high-power LED in red, green, blue and white can be operated at up to 2.5 ampere (DC) thanks to improved chip technologies. This leads to twice the output of 30 watts (electric) from the same chip and package area compared to the existing version, adding another output class to the product family. The new LEDs were developed primarily for use in stage spotlights.

Panasonic Develops 4.5W High Power Continuous Blue Violet Semiconductor Laser

Panasonic Corporation today announced that it has developed a blue-violet semiconductor laser operating at output power of 4.5 W, which is 1.5 times higher than that of the conventional one even at 60ºC, the maximum operating temperature for lasers in general.  It can also oscillate with the high energy conversion efficiency, which is 1.2 times higher than that of conventional lasers. This has been made possible by Panasonic’s unique double heat flow packaging technology that improves the heat dissipation. This newly-developed laser will help laser application systems, such as vehicle and industrial lighting as well as laser machining equipment, to be made smaller and consume less power.

New York Rolls out Pilot LED Lamp Project to Monitor Air Quality at Nail Salons

In 2015, Pegasus Capital Advisors committed to catalyzing healthier working conditions and improved air quality in New York City’s nail salons. An issue largely overlooked, nail polish contains many volatile organic compounds which permeate the air and are health hazards for workers and customers alike. Pegasus and its partner, Lighting Science Group (LSG), have developed the Genesis Light, a desktop light that monitors and reports on air quality wirelessly using a sensor chip embedded in the lamp. It uses easy to read emoticons on the units, as well as transmits data that will be accessible online. Empowering salon workers and customers, Pegasus, LSG, and partner the NYC Public Advocate will deploy 50 free Genesis Lights to nail salons that they identify in hopes that the pilot program will inspire customers and regulators to make informed decisions that will ultimately incentivize a continuing domino effect in nail salons to better manage their air quality.
