Philips presented its smart Hue bulb range, OLED panels, and various mart lighting technologies at at Light+Building 2014, which runs from March 31 to April 4, 2014 at Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Center in Frankfurt, Germany.LEDinside Research Director Roger Chu noted while the lighting giant’s booth was less impressive than last year the company was sending a clear message to consumers with its product portfolio choice. “Philips product portfolio showcased this year sends a clear message to consumers about the company’s ambition in presenting future lighting technologies,” said Chu.

Featured Philips Hue bulbs
Continuing its global marketing strategy of promoting smart lighting, Philips Hue was a highlight at the show. The company presented a Hue bulb corridor that demonstrated the bulbs turning different shades of color in sync with music at the show. The set up definitely indicates how the bulbs are capable of building up a pleasant atmosphere, while presenting the controllability aspect of the product, explained Chu.

Expanding Philips Hue lighting fixtures
The company also showcased new luminaires for the Hue range at the show. Noticeably the company has launched a new 3D printed luminaire designed by German designers Jan Wertel and Gernot Oberfell of WertelOberfell. The luminaires that cost US$ 3,000 to US$ 6,000 per piece are inspired from shelled animals, and comprise of Hue lighting modules.

Smarter lighting applications
Aside from residential smart lighting solutions, Philips also displayed new smart lighting solutions for office, retail and urban applications. The smart lighting solutions displayed mostly utilized Zigbee or WiFi wireless technology, noted Chu.
One of the products highlighted was Power Over Ethernet (PoE) smart LED lighting solutions. The smart lighting solution is already being applied in Philips headquarters in Amsterdam. Every luminaire is installed with LED lighting PoE and a sensor that collects various environment information including habits of office staff members. Via an Internet connection the luminaires are adjusted individually, while monitoring the environment temperature to reduce energy consumption.

Other lighting applications
Philips also showcased several solutions that previously were displayed at Euroshop in February 2014, including lighting portfolio for food lighting. The lighting designed for supermarket and retail applications is focused on reducing discoloration of foods and beverages to make products more appealing to consumers. Another solution showcased was architectural lighting products from the company’s night-time urban lighting portfolio to enliven city nightscapes.
