Korean Manufacturers Showcase Latest Lighting Technologies at Light + Building 2014

Korean manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Seoul Semiconductor, Woree and Lumens were huddled in Hall 6 of Light + Building 2014 show that recently took place in Frankfurt, Germany. These Korean manufacturers displayed their latest LED packages, LED smart controllers, and new OLED products.

Samsung

Samsung’s booth design was similar to the display industry and heavily relied on displays. The company used a large number of transparent displays again this year to highlight products, giving the booth an overall high-tech vibe. The booth was segmented into two display areas one for advanced LED technology, and the other for LED lighting product development.

The company’s lighting product area was dominated by dimmable bulbs and smart lighting systems, including Zigbee and Bluetooth controllable smart bulbs. The company also showcased LED tubes that are either Electronic Control Gear (ECG) or CCG compatible, but ECG/CCG compatible tubes are not expected to debut till second half of 2014.

The company’s advanced LED technology, however, received the most attention at the show. The company displayed its LED roadmap, which incorporates flip chip LED, GaN on Si LED, and nano LED. Worth noting is nano LED technology emphasizes growing different types of materials on the same epiwafer to stimulate blue, green and red light. This enables white light to be produced without phosphor powder. If the technology can be realized by 2016, it will completely revolutionize the LED industry.

LG

Another major Korean manufacturer LG displayed different applications and division of work in Hall 6 of the lighting fair. LG Innotek displayed different types of LED components, LG Chem showcased OLED related applications, while different lighting applications were shown at LG Electronics.

Many visitors were attracted by LG Chem’s OLED products, especially as the company claims its mass produced OLED panels have reached luminous efficacy of 60 lm/W. According to LG Chem, at the R&D phase the OLED panels can reach 100 lm/W. LG’s OLED products had the highest luminous efficacy out of all the OLED products showcased.

Seoul Semiconductor

Seoul semiconductor displayed LEDs for different application fields including LED components for automotive lighting. The company highlighted both low power LED and its Acrich series LED, which included 4 to 12W AC LED modules. Since Acrich modules are LED products that can be directly plugged in or unplugged without the use of converters, the products long lifetime, and convenient designs are quite evident.

Lumens

Korean manufacturer Lumens also displayed very competitive LED components at the show this year. Especially the company’s Eragon series flip chips, which incorporate silver free technology. In general to increase luminous efficacy, flip chips are coated with silver material that functions as a reflective layer. However, the silver coated layer has a tendency of oxidizing when moved or dislocated, which can cause color deviations in LEDs. Lumens silver free technology can prevent this from happening.
