Lack of Universal Product Code Rule for LED Light Bulbs Proves Problematic

Among all the LED products, LED light bulb is by far the most relevant as far as the end users are concerned. However, it has always been difficult for the consumers to tell the specifications differences between assorted LED light bulbs.

For example, Japanese big name company Toshiba’s LED light bulbs have three kinds of product codes. Consumers oftentimes buy the wrong products due to their inability to read the product codes. Lack of a universal product codes for global LED light bulbs proves to be a very serious issue.

Global giants Philips, GE, Osram, Sharp, Panasonic, Samsung as well as Taiwanese and Chinese companies are no exception. Currently most LED makers use five-digit or six-digit numbers to distinguish their LED light bulbs, and the problem remains that the companies are yet to decide on all using five-digit numbers or six-digit ones, not to mention that some companies even use dashes in their product codes.

According to LEDinside’s survey, certain companies have different codes for the one product line, which can be fairly confusing for internet buyers. For instance, Philips’ L-Prize winning LED light bulbs series have three different products codes, which is due to the specifications differences between the light bulbs. If the LED industry sets up a universal rule for product codes, it can help increase consumers’ confidence in LED lighting products.
