Philips Lighting has been in a leading position among the global lighting industry and is striving to raise energy-saving awareness in the society.
Jaap Schlejen, the Vice President of Philips Lighting, provided not only an in-depth analysis of the trend of the lighting market in scenery, outdoor, and office sectors but also a comprehensive conclusion of the LED lighting system market, which threw light on the future development of the LED lighting market.

Shuji Nakamura, Ph.D., the inventor of the first high brightness gallium nitride (GaN) LED, addressed the current state and future trend of solid-state lighting market from a professional and research perspective.
He analyzed the different equipment of GaN LED from the structural drawings of nonpolar molecule and semi-polar molecule. Also, he explained the increase of the bulk GaN crystal.
Shuji Nakamura, currently a professor of Materials Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara, received B.E., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokushima, Japan in 1977, 1979, and 1994, respectively. He, widely known as the “Thomas Edison of the LED industry,” developed the first groupIII nitride-based blue/green LEDs and group-III nitride-based violet laser diodes (LDs) in the world.
In addition, he successfully developed the first commercially viable white LEDs based on GaN, which becomes an integral part of the booming development of the global LED industry.
OSRAM: Prospects for Global Solid-State Lighting Market
OSRAM, which owns a number of world-leading patents and has provided numerous world renowned constructions with lighting products and solutions, is not only one of the major lighting companies in the world but also an innovative LED lighting company. Benjamin Tan., VP of Sales of Osram Asia Pacific provided his insight into the global market of solid-state lighting.
Benjamin Tan stated that the future goal of the LED industry is to optimize the products in every aspect. The size of wafer has become bigger and bigger: it developed from 2-inch to 6 and 8-inch. Osram has started its first 6-inch wafer production in 2011.
OSRAM already began dedicating to the development of new light source since the last century and prided itself in being one of the first companies to launch white light LED products. Currently, OSRAM’s products have made their ways into car, signal light and building markets. OSRAM states that the popularization of LED in lighting applications is still at the initial stage, because presently, most of the LED applications are street lamps or for specific usages, which account for a mere portion of sales in the lighting market. It is expected that LED will take up a bigger share in the household lighting market in the future.
GE Lighting: LED Systems Design for Application
The afternoon sessions began with a unique insight into the lighting product quality provided by Samuel Wang, the Product General Manager of GE Lighting Asia LED. Mr. Wang also interacted and discussed the LED applications with the audience.
His speech not only addressed quality assurance and introduced the formula of return on investment, but also covered topics of LED energy-saving applications and the cost.
Moreover, the unparalleled performance and innovative design of GE’s products, including GE Module Roadway R250 Series, were also demonstrated in the speech.
VEECO: Reducing LED Manufacturing Costs through Advancements in MOCVD Technology
Jia Lee, the Director of Marketing of Veeco Instruments, addressed “Reducing LED Manufacturing Costs through Advancements in MOCVD Technology.”
Mr. Lee expected the penetration rate of LED TV to reach 50% in 2011 and to advance to 80% in 2013. He also predicted that the increasing rate of LED chips will reach 68% in the next five years. In addition, with the fast growth of the LED industry, he provided relevant data to demonstrate how the advancement of MOCVD equipment is able to aid manufacturers in reducing costs, provide a system for designing high-brightness LEDs, increase capacity and decrease carbon emission.

AIXTRON: Improving Production Quality and Efficiency of MOCVD Market

Bill Scalia, the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Carbon TEQ Solutions, presented his insight into heat management in lighting applications and new technologies to manage heat. His speech covered different sections such as carbon foam material and the methodology, research, design and science of TEQ2.
In the science section, he introduced a new molecular structure named ScaliaPhysics™ which he developed. In addition, with his expertise in heat dissipation technology, Bill Scalia has successfully helped his clients reduce the energy consumption and the maintenance cost as well as extended the lifespan of products with TEQ Methodology.

LEDinside (TrendForce Corp.): Solid-State Lighting/LED Market Trend in 2012
Due to the fact that the development of LED industry has been the focus of relevant industries over the past few years, Roger Chu, the Research Director of LEDinside, presented a comprehensive report on “Solid-State Lighting/LED Market Trend in 2012.”
Mr. Chu’s report mainly included the estimation of the development trend, the outlook on both ends of supply-and-demand chain and the competition and cooperation of the LED industry. He pointed out that due to the rise of Chinese and South-Korean LED market, the LED price has more or less shown a decline in NB, TV, mobile device applications over the past few years. According to his report, the demand of HB LED will continue increasing in the coming years.
He pointed out that the focus of the TV market has shifted to 3D sector, which results in a decrease in the LED penetration rate. Scenery lighting accounts for the biggest market share in 2010. He stated that currently, many countries have enact policies to support the LED industry. He used the loan policy by the South Korean government as an example to demonstrate his point.
Mr. Chu indicated that the LED penetration rate in Japanese market, which reached 18 to 20% in 2010, has increased by 20 to 30% due to the Japan earthquake. He believed even though the increase rate will slow down in July and August, but the increase will continue.
Besides, he also analyzed the upstream and downstream of the LED industry, including MOCVD, sapphire substrate and other sectors, and predicted the subsidy policies enacted by different governments.

Philips Lumileds Lighting Company: The Success and Challenge in LED Lighting Component Industry
After the speech by Philips Lighting on the first day, Sean Zhou, Regional Marketing Director of Philips Lumileds Lighting Company, shared the successful experience of Philips Lumileds and his opinion on the challenges the LED indoor lighting sector is facing.
At first, Mr. Zhou concisely analyzed the LED market from different sectors such as hotel lighting, office lighting and LED replacement light, and then he pointed out the key element in indoor lighting and explained the LED bin code and thermal dissipation issue from a professional perspective. In the indoor lighting part of his speech, he analyzed the light quality, efficiency and cost. As for the solution to bin code issue, he dissected the issue by providing a deliberate explanation of the definition, advantage and the final goal of his method.
He believed, as far as indoor lighting is concerned, even though the LED penetration rate in the office lighting sector seems limited at the moment, it also shows great promise: lighting applications account for 30 to 50% of the total orders from commercial buildings. In the future, the new office buildings will put more accent on lighting in order to meet the energy-saving requirement, which will in turn increase the popularity of T-LEDs.
Everlight Electronics: The Trend of Solid-State Lighting End-Market Applications
Ilkan Cokgor, the Vice President of Global Marketing of Everlight Electronics, has over 20 years of research, product development, marketing and sales experience in the fields of optoelectronics, LEDs and solid state lighting.
He announced statistics and diagrams of LED price/performance ratio and LED energy-saving performance. He believed that LED energy-saving technology can help reduce energy consumption and increase profits. To prove his point, he also provided statistics of energy consumption and profit increase.
Mr. Cokgor, who holds a Ph.D. in Optelectronics from the King’s College, University of London, gave a presentation addressing the trend of solid-state lighting end-market applications, in which he compared the LEDs which adopt more reliable flip-chip packages with LEDs that adopt regular packages.
Henkel AG & Co.: Innovations in Assembly Solutions for LED Lighting
Kent Lu, the LED Sales Manager of Henkel AG & Co., addressed Henkel’s innovations in assembly solutions for LED lighting. He introduced not only the construction, the global capacity, partners, breakthroughs, quality and efficiency of Henkel, but also Henkel’s solutions in the LED lighting supply chain.
The solutions include materials of LED chip packages, conductive materials, thermal dissipation products such as heat conductive adhesive, thermal pad, phase change material which are crucial to LED lighting products, encapsulation and protection of LED driver and light bar, and low-pressure and low-temperature molding technology and products.
Henkel’s technology in the LED sector is an integration of that of Ablestik, Emerson & Cuming, Hysol and Loctite, which is proficient to provide the market with total solutions of LED package and lighting product assembly.
Miniwiz: Innovative LED Application in Green Building
Arthur Huang, the Founder and Managing Director of Miniwiz, addressed the innovative applications in green buildings and the future trend in his presentation.

ELB Electronics: Lighting Control Solutions for Commercial Building Applications
Steven J. Purdy, the Product Research and Development Director of ELB Electronics and in charge of the development of ELB products, plans to establish ELB into the forerunner in the dimming ballast and lighting control market of North America.
His speech covered LED applications in RF wireless lighting control. Mr. Purdy believed that due to the fact that lighting control systems can reduce energy consumption by 50% and bring positive effects to the environment, they will become more and more popularized in intellectualized buildings.
Moreover, Purdy introduced a number of RF technologies. RF wireless control does not require cable network. Users are able to control lighting equipment through the tiny portable remote control to achieve excellent compatibility with the lighting system. Synopsys: Successful Optical Design of LED Lighting and Backlight Systems
David Stuart, the Director of Sales of Synopsys, gave a presentation about the successful optical design of LED lighting and backlight systems with a 31-page PowerPoint file and two relevant cases.
With an example of a successful optical design of LED lighting and backlight systems by utilizing LightTools and SolidWorks, Mr. Stuart pointed out the key design strategy and explained the concrete method and LED resource model. In addition, his presentation also covered the design and optimization of SolidWorks.
Mr. Stuart stated that using LightTools, which is a powerful tool for designing, analyzing and optimizing LED applications, and SolidWorks for the applications of LED lighting and backlight systems have become the mainstream in the market.

Jiangsu Canyang Optoelectronics Ltd.: Competing Internationally: LED Lighting Future Development from Experience
As the last speaker of LEDforum Shanghai 2011, Frank Chien, Ph.D., the President and CEO of Jiangsu Canyang Optoelectronics Ltd., addressed the future development of LED lighting from an international perspective.
Mr. Chien analyzed the current situation of the LED lighting industry and proposed a development strategy catering to the present trend. He indicated that the LED applications and penetration rate in household electrical appliances have proven fruitful, which results in a cost reduction of LED manufacturing.
Currently, IT products dominate the LED market, but the landscape is soon to change. In the next two years, TV will become the main source of demand in the LED market, and lighting applications will begin to take over afterward. Mr. Chien also stated that through technology integration, the only goal of Jiangsu Canyang is to provide lighting companies with light sources which possess high price/performance ratio, supreme reliability and meet lighting regulations.
LEDinside expected the MOCVD capacity of Jiangsu Canyang to reach 50 units, GaN LED epi wafer capacity to reach 1.44 million and LED chip capacity to hit 18 billion by the end of 2011. Jiangsu Canyang specializes in manufacturing high-brightness GaN LED epi wafers, LED chips and indoor and outdoor lighting products, whose wavelength range reaches 385nm to 560nm. Panel Discussion: LED Interior Lighting and The Realization of LED Innovative Applications
The higher executives of Philips Lighting, Philips Lumileds, Jiangsu Canyang, Veeco, Aixtron, Tridonic attended the panel discussion regarding interior lighting and market. The panel discussion was hosted by Sean Zhou, Regional Marketing Director of Philips Lumileds Lighting Company.
In light of the fact that different markets hold different demands for LED products, Jaap Schlejen, the Vice President of Philips Lighting, stated that trend of LED lighting products needs to be analyzed from the household application market perspective as well as the professional application market. On one hand, in the household application market, the emphasis is placed on cost and reliability: only products with low cost and high reliability will be able to obtain large market share. On the other hand, in the professional application market, efficiency outweighs other factors.
