【Touch Taiwan 2019】Micro LEDs Hit Automotive and Wearable Applications

Touch Taiwan closed on August 30. Visitors at the show could find a wide range of display applications from wearables panel below 1 inch to large TVs up to 120-inch based on Mini LED and Micro LED technologies.

One of the eye-catching products showcased by panel manufacturer AUO is the 12.1-inch Micro LED automotive panel that delivered vivid colors, high contrast and smooth display performance. At the same time, an AM Mini LED display flaunted an astonishing screen quality. According to AUO, since automotive verification takes long time, the company sees that mass production of Mini LED and Micro LED automotive displays will be around 2024.

AUO also exhibited a series of Mini LED backlit displays during Touch Taiwan 2019. Its K-zone Mini LED series featured more than 1000 local diming zones to achieve high contrasts and refresh rates which were presented by gaming displays and AR device at the event.

Super-large displays were the products of focus for Innolux, who displayed a 120-inch 8K TV and interactive whiteboards as well as a variety of AM Mini LED backlight products. Innolux divided the diming zones to more than 10,000, bringing the display quality to a whole new level. Curved automotive products with Mini LED backlight were also its show highlights. .

Passive drive panel specialist RiTdisplay, who began collaboration with PlayNitride since May, demonstrated the co-developed small sized Micro LED display modules for wearables. The 1.25-inch Micro LED displays were with glass substrate while the 0.94-inch flexible display based on thin film. Both panels possessed a resolution of 228ppi and were scheduled for mass production in 2020.

Apart from end products, upstream suppliers also displayed key equipment and materials for Micro LED manufacturing processes.

A collaborator of TOPCO’s, Shin-Etsu Chemical, showcased adhesive glue used in Micro LED mass transfer process. On the other hand, agency company Nagase introduced various industrial materials, including a film material to be used as Micro LED flexible substrate.

Japan-based equipment maker Toray also exhibited its proprietary solutions for Micro LED inspection and repair, getting ready for the booming development of Micro LED.
