After visiting Lighting Japan 2011 exhibition, LEDinside gained vital insight into the definition of an excellent international exhibition: a comprehensive platform. How was Lighting Japan 2011 able to provide such a wide diversity of themes and contents? What does the future look like for exhibitions in the LED industry? LEDinside conducted an interview with Hajime Suzuki, Director of International Sales & Marketing at Reed Exhibition, the organizer of Lighting Japan, regarding the new trend in global lighting exhibitions.

According to LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce, sales revenues of public listed LED manufacturers in Taiwan totaled NT$7.347 billion(MoM-9.22%，YoY+18.1%) in February, 2011. Sales revenues of upstream chip manufacturers reached NT$3.471 billion(MoM-7.9%; YoY+23%) in February, 2011, up 23% compared to the same month of 2010. As for Taiwanese downstream LED package manufacturers, suffering from fewer working days in February, sales revenues reached NT$3.876 billion(MoM-10.3%，YoY+14%) , down 9.22% on month, but up 18.1% compared to the same month of 2010.

Based on the analysis and statistics of LEDinside, which is a research division under TrendForce, International LED major manufacturers successively released their 4Q10 financial reports. In terms of upstream equipment suppliers, the LED & Solar revenue of Veeco set the highest quarterly record of USD 258 million. Over 20 customers, such Shanghai Epilight, placed the purchase orders for lighting application. However, the planned shipment of 12-20 new MOCVD products「MaxBright」are not included in the Q1 financial statement. Besides, the revenue-accounting delay is expected to greatly affect the result of Q1 revenue. However, since the fund-subsidy policy launched by Chinese government, LED enterprises keep on production expansions. The orders of Korean customers are expected to surge in backlight and lighting markets in Q2 and Q3. Moreover, it is forecasted that the MOCVD orders for K465i and MaxBright will also increase in the markets of Europe, USA, Japan and Taiwan. To sum up, Veeco is still optimistic about market quotations in the first half of 2011.

Besides the fields of lighting and backlight, the LED demand has also increased in the emerging applications of vehicle, projector and flashlight in these years. LEDinside had the exclusive interview with Dr. Alfred Felder, the President and CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Asia Ltd., owned by Osram group, and discussed the major LED companies’ view about the future of LED industrial development, as well as the fields which would become the development direction in the future market.

LED Price Trend in 1Q10 According to LEDinside's price trend report, LED supply and demand are fairly stable in the first quarter of 2010. There is a seasonal proce erosion of 2-5% across backlight applications. For LED lighting application, the QoQ price erosion of high power LED appeared to be more servere, over 10%, due to invantory adjustment.

The global standardization of LED lighting products has been garnering attention. A group of conventional lighting industry players from Europe, U.S. and Japan have formed an industrial alliance — Zhaga Consortium — to facilitate the design and promote the global standardization of LED lighting products.

According to LEDinside’s latest price trend report, the growing shipment in LED backlight and lighting application led to a shortage in the chip supply. As a result, the white LED prices remained flat in 4Q09: Prices for backlighting dropped slightly by 1-3%, while prices of high power LEDs remained stable.

The publication of relevant criteria for LED lighting will be of vital importance for the development of LED industry, said Lee Soo Ghee, Cree’s Vice President / General Manager Asia Pacific, at the LEDforum 2009. With the criteria set up, the quality of LED lighting will get controlled and standardized, which is expected to accelerate the promotion of LED lighting as well as more quickly realize the substantial drop in cost of energy saving, he said.

After releasing three draft editions, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published the final ENERGY STAR Eligibility Criteria for integral LED lamps on December 4, 2009. The new Energy Star criteria will go into effect as of August 31, 2010.

Energy Focus, Inc. yesterday announced that it has been awarded a $0.5 million SBIR extension grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop and produce solid state lighting fixtures for general use on Navy ships. It’s reported that Konka Group Co., Ltd., of Shenzhen, China, announces that it is to open its LED backlight design and production line in Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, Eastern China in mid December 2008. Established in May 1980, the Shenzhen company plans to spend three to five years building a complete LED industrial chain in China. The industrial chain is expected to produce LED related products with a value of more than CNY 10 billion per year.
