Innovative lighting manufacturer LEDVANCE on November 2nd released an update saying the company laid off 90 employees at the headquarters in Wilmington, Massachusetts, reported tED magazine.

LEDVANCE, one of the global leaders in general lighting, has committed to the Clean Energy Ministerial Global Lighting Challenge (GLC). During the eighth Clean Energy Ministerial Summit (CEM8) in Beijing, LEDVANCE announced its commitment to selling 2.5 billion energy efficient LED Lamps by 2023.

The long-awaited sale of LEDVANCE, originally the general lighting lamps business of German lighting giant Osram, to the Chinese investment consortium, consisting of the strategic investor IDG Capital, MLS, and Yiwu State-Owned Assets Operation Center (Yiwu), was finally completed on March 3, 2017. At the LFI 2017 held in Philadelphia, LEDinside met with LEDVANCE’s CEO Jes Munk Hansen to talk about the recent deal and its strategic position in the lighting market.

Due to a major asset restructuring, from July 18, 2016, shares trade of MLS, China’s leading LED packaging manufacturer, remained suspended until May 2, 2017. MLS announced it would spend up to RMB 4 billion (around US$580 million) to acquire the whole ownership of Guangdong Mingxin Optoelectronic, which holds a 100% stake in LEDVANCE. By doing so, MLS would gain full control of LEDVANCE, originally Osram’s lamps and lighting unit. This partnership is expected to create synergies in manufacturing, distribution, R&D, and branding, offering both sides important competitive advantages in the post LED lighting era.

LEDVANCE is unveiling new SYLVANIA lighting solutions for the commercial and residential market at Booth 1701 at LIGHTFAIR International (LFI), the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference taking place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center May 7 — 11, 2017. In North America, LEDVANCE offers professional users and retail customers SYLVANIA advanced LED bulbs, standardized luminaires and smart lighting solutions, as well as traditional light sources.

1. Add more energy-efficient lighting – Lighting accounts for more than 15 percent of the electricity used at home.  Changing to energy-efficient LED bulbs can save you up to 85 percent on your lighting electricity use and reduce associated air pollution emissions from the power plants that burn fossil fuels to generate that electricity.     You’ll see an immediate reduction in your energy bill by changing incandescent bulbs to LED lighting, like the first-to-market SYLVANIA 10-Year (Contractor Series) LED Portfolio.   2. Depend on ENERGY STAR – Choosing energy-consuming products with the ENERGY STAR label can help save you energy and money.   3. Vampire energy – Electronics and small appliances that plug into the wall and have a remote or have an electronic display or LED status light can suck energy even when not in use.  Reduce "standby power" (the energy used even while an appliance is switched off or not performing its primary function) at home and at work.     The easiest way is to unplug gadgets not in use.  You can also use power surge protector strips (with multiple electrical outlets) and turn the power off at the strip.  For safety, keep frequently-used appliances plugged in like the TV, cable box, microwave and alarm clock.   4. Off with the monitor! – Turn off your monitor at the end of the day.  Monitors consume 80 percent of a desktop’s energy.  Even in “sleep mode,” monitors are still drawing a small, unnecessary amount of power.   5. Cargo impact – Avoid carrying unneeded items in your vehicle’s trunk.  An extra 100 pounds in your car’s trunk cuts fuel economy by up to 2 percent.   6. Act Smart -- Smart lighting, like SYLVANIA Smart+, allows users to have convenient control of their lighting and electronics, optimize their home and work environments, improve efficiency, and help save time and energy.  By turning lights on and off with schedules you create via an app, you can control when and where you use your lighting, and you’ll save energy.    Imagine coming home to a welcoming porch light that turns on just before you get home, rather than leaving it on all day.  Smart plugs allow you do the same with your window AC units, turning them on remotely 15 minutes before you arrive home for example.  Your home will be cool when you arrive without having your AC run for hours when you’re away.   7. Tire inflation – Keep tires properly inflated and aligned.  You can improve your gas mileage by up to 5 cents per gallon by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure.    8. Electronics recycling – Electronics such as computers, printers, cell phones, compact fluorescent light bulbs and other gadgets contain small amounts of hazardous material like lead.  Many retail stores, municipalities and electronic manufacturers offer returns or collection of these items that get sent to special facilities for proper recycling.   In honor of Earth Day on April 22, lighting company LEDVANCE is sharing simple “ADVOCATE” tips for those who want to be more environmentally conscious and support the health of our planet. The sale of LEDVANCE by OSRAM to the Chinese investment consortium, consisting of the strategic investor IDG Capital, the LED packaging manufacturer MLS CO., LTD. (MLS) and Yiwu State-Owned Assets Operation Center (Yiwu), was successfully completed effective on March 3rd, 2017 and with economic effect as of March 1st, 2017. This follows the parties obtaining all necessary approvals from the relevant authorities.

Osram is close to receiving approval from the German government to go ahead with the sales of its general lighting business LEDVANCE to a Chinese investment consortium headed by IDG Capital Partners (IDG), reported DrivingVisionNews.com.

Before celebrating the New Year, Chinese-language newspaper UDN in Taiwan has a tradition of conducting an annual poll, requesting readers to pick out a word that best represents the year. For 2016, the Taiwanese people chose the Chinese character Ku (苦), which can be translated as a bitter taste, hardships or even a painful experience. Osram recently announced the latest developments about the acquisition transaction of its LED general lighting business sales to a Chinese investment  consortium headed by IDG Capital.

The German government has temporarily halted Chinese consortium headed by strategic investor IDG Capital Partners (IDG) to acquire Osram’s general lighting business LEDVANCE, and have put the deal under review, Reuters cited German magazine WirtschaftsWoche recent report.

LEDVANCE announced a wide range of new SYLVANIA LED lighting solutions for both residential and commercial applications. Available now or in the near future, first-to-market products include an easy option for updating recessed lighting, and connected indoor/outdoor and under cabinet lighting.  The company is also launching a motion and temperature sensor – a major step toward automating intelligent light – and Energy Star® qualified LED A19 and A21 lamps that are rated at 15,000 hours, offering long life at a good value, and eligible for utility rebates.

Since September 2009, energy consumption-relevant light sources have been disappearing step-by-step from the market. This year it’s the turn of the high voltage reflector tungsten halogen lamps as best-known representatives. These are no longer permitted to be put into circulation in the European Union from 1 September 2016 as part of the third step of Directive (EU) 1194/2012.
