Researchers based in China have been exploring the benefits of using freestanding (FS) gallium nitride (GaN) as a substrate for micro light-emitting diodes (LEDs) [Guobin Wang et al, Optics Express, v32, p31463, 2024]. In particular, the team developed an optimized indium gallium nitride (InGaN) multiple quantum well (MQW) structure with improved performance at lower current injection (~10A/cm2) and lower driving voltages as suitable for the advanced micro-displays used in augmented (AR) and virtual reality (VR) setups where the higher cost of FS-GaN can be compe...

Samsung Display is one of the biggest innovators in the industry. Among the wildest concepts the division has worked on over the years is the extendable display. And on top of that, there's another one that uses 50% less battery power. So the revolution is about to fall.
There is a conference this week IMID 2024 and Samsung here she performed its latest generation of stretchable display, which has continued to evolve and improve since we were first able to see it (which was back in 2017). It is based on micro LED technology and can be extended by 25%. In other wor...

It was reported earlier this year that Apple cancelled plans for a micro-LED Apple Watch, finding them too difficult to produce in the quantities that would be needed. Display supplier LG was set to make a key component for this display, and is now said to be seeking compensation for the cancellation of the project … Apple’s move toward micro-LED Apple is so still to complete its transition to its third display technology, OLED: Originally, it used LCD with conventional backlighting Then it moved on to LCD with mini-LED backlighti...

In June 2022, Tianma Microelectronics announced plans to establish a 1.1 billion Yuan ($164 million USD) full-process microLED pilot line, in Xiamen. A few days ago, Tianma announced that its production line has commenced trial production. The new production line is co-located with a 8.6-Gen LCD fan at the Tongxiang High-Tech New Town in Xiamen. Tianma also detailed the first microLED display is produced at the new plant, a 7.5" module aimed towards tiled displays, that offers a brightness of 600 nits and a low 5% reflectance. This is the first time ...

Los Angeles-based Q-Pixel has developed microLED display technology which it says has achieved the highest resolution, active-matrix colour display in the world. Q-Pixel’s display offers 6800 pixels per inch (PPI), surpassing current displays. The technology replaces the traditional three subpixel LEDs with a single polychromatic LED.
Q-Pixel has fabricated its display entirely using microLED pixels, technology which has been notoriously challenging to implement.
Unlike most advanced VR displays, which use micro-organic LEDs (micro-OLEDs), Q-...
