Philips Lighting announced that its Philips iColor Accent MX Powercore LED lights provided the interactive digital lighting for the exterior architectural frame of Montreal’s iconic Jacques Cartier Bridge Illumination.  The bridge illumination was unveiled during a grand opening celebration earlier this week to commemorate both Montreal’s 375th birthday and Canada’s 150th.

Lumileds today announced that George Craford, Lumileds Solid State Lighting Fellow, was selected for the IEEE Edison Medal for “a lifetime of pioneering contributions to the development and commercialization of visible LED materials and devices.” Craford will be presented with the medal at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in San Francisco on May 25, 2017, during the IEEE Vision, Innovations, and Challenges (IEEE VIC) Summit.

Heliospectra AB (publ), a global provider of intelligent lighting technology for controlled plant growth environments, announced today that University of Sydney's Centre of Carbon, Water and Food has purchased Heliospectra LED lighting solutions valued at $90,800 USD (823,601 SEK).

To better understand the obstacles to manufacturing, specifying, procuring, and installing LED lighting products, the U.S. Department of Energy's GATEWAY program has released a report evaluating the long-term performance characteristics (chromaticity change, maintained illuminance, and operations and maintenance) of LED lighting systems in four field installations, each of which was previously documented in its own DOE report:

Like any new technology, LED lighting must demonstrate a compelling value to buyers before it begins to win sizeable market share from the incumbent technologies it will replace. Over the past decade, research and development have yielded impressive improvements in the cost, color performance, light output, efficacy, reliability, lifetime, and manufacturability of LED products. Looking at LED packages specifically, the cost in dollars per kilolumen ($/klm) has been declining rapidly since 2005 at a rate of around 20% per year. As a result, LED lighting products have become competitive in almost every lighting application, but there is still room for improvement.
