Vauxhall is introducing Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) and full LED headlamps to its new Zafira Tourer and Mokka X models.

Optimum visibility without dazzling others. With AFL LED, Opel is bringing the benefits of adaptive forward lighting and full LED headlamps to vans and sport utility vehicles in the compact market segment. The optional AFL LED headlamps offered by the new Opel Zafira and Opel Mokka X produce a bright white light that effectively turns night into day and automatically adapt to the driving situation. AFL LED features nine individual functions or lighting patterns such as Town Light, Country Light and Stop Mode Light, which not only optimize visibility but also save energy.

OLED technology opens up completely new design options for light sources which are generating huge interest among customers in the automotive industry. As part of the R2D2 project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), research was carried out into flexible OLEDs, the next innovation in this technology. “Progress in OLED technology is rapid”, said Dr. Marc Luennemann, Head of OLED at Osram. “With the successful completion of the project the partners demonstrated impressively that we can expect flexible OLEDs to be ready for series production in only a few years’ time – above all for automotive lighting.”

Starting from 2012-2014, bans on incandescent lights has led to the gradual entry of LED products in the residential lighting markets, according to a latest search report by LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce. Improved LED luminous efficacy and lowered LED product prices contributed to higher consumer acceptance levels and rising penetration rates. Japan was the largest LED residential lighting market in 2012, followed by Europe and North America. However, China’s residential lighting’s global market share is also growing.

According to LEDinside, observed from the 2013 regional residential lighting market development, the Chinese market proportion will increase from 19% in 2012 to 24%, becoming the fastest-growing regional market. In terms of the European market, the implementation of comprehensive ban of incandescent lamps and the economic recovery after the European debt crisis gradually had a positive impact on LED light bulb market, and the LED light bulb market penetration rate is expected to increase.

Topco held its Shareholders conference on June 17, Dr. J. W. Kuo, the chairman of Topco, expressed on the conference that car LED lights and indoor lighting would be its two main development directions in this year, also Topco plans to access to the hottest plant factory in near future, and integrate its LED and other related materials to provide a complete solution to shipping. Osram Opto Semiconductors announces the prototype of the Oslon Compact, currently the most compact high-power LED for the automotive market. Thanks to the flexible arrangement of these small LEDs it will be much easier and more cost-effective to create individual headlight designs. A prototype of the Oslon Compact LED was unveiled by the automotive semiconductor specialist from Regensburg in October at the SIA Vision conference in Versailles (France, October 9/10).
