Sony Abandons OLED for 4K LCD

Sony is suspending OLED TV production as sales slump. The Japanese manufacturer is instead turning their sights to 4K LCD TVs as they are less expensive to manufacturer and sell at much lower prices compared to OLED TVs, reports Japan’s Nikkei. Half of the TV sets Sony intends to launch on the market next year include 4K sets.

Universal Display Corporation reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2014. For the first quarter of 2014, the Company reported net income of US $4.0 million, or US $0.09 per diluted share, on revenues of US $37.8 million. For the first quarter of 2013, the Company reported a net loss of US $4.8 million, or US $(0.10) per diluted share, on revenues of US $15.0 million.

Lighting Japan 2014 Ends on a High Note

Lighting Japan 2014 was comprised of three specialized shows, including the LED/OLED Lighting Expo, making it the biggest ever. Running from Jan. 15-17, the show was held at Big Sight Tokyo. Global lighting heavy weights including Philips, Osram, GE, Panasonic, and Toshiba to name a few, all displayed their new products for the upcoming year. LED components were not the only focal point of the expo. Lighting application and high density integration (HDI) systems also draw a lot of attention from buyers and visitors.
