Philips Lumileds Mid-Power LED Differentiation Strategy Focuses on Binning

The maturation of LED lighting has given mid-power LED products star status. Philips Lumileds, a major player in the international lighting scene, has shown its resolve in taking mid-power LEDs to another level. Besides releasing four new mid-power LED products in March, the company has introduced a whole new binning method into its new products. Philips Lumileds is providing mid-power LEDs with excellent lighting quality to differentiate itself from competitors in the mid-power product market, said Sean Zhou, Regional Marketing Director, Asia, Philips Lumileds.

With origins in high power LED products, Philips Lumileds is not new to the mid-power LED market. The company’s mid-power LED products are already used in large volumes in the automotive lighting market. Since 2013, the company has been actively entering the mid-power general lighting market. “Philips Lumileds general lighting product strategy has completely changed, it will no longer be focused on high-power general lighting products, but will be increasingly shifting to become a provider of integrated lighting solutions,” said Zhou. The company’s mid-power strategy has become clearer in 2014, as the company launched LUXEON 3535 HV, LUXEON 3014, LUXEON 3030 2D and LUXEON 3020. The company aims to complete its mid-power LED range this year.

In the past, mid-power LEDs underperformed high power LED products in terms of lighting quality, color control and stability. By entering the mid-power LED market, Philips Lumileds aims to introduce high quality lighting into mid-power LEDs. A clear trend observed in the market since 2013 is luminous efficacy is no longer a hot topic, said Zhou. This is because luminous efficacy has improved significantly in the past, and has already surpassed conventional lighting. Currently, the market is increasingly focused on lighting quality, and this will become an increasingly important subject in the future.

To improve lighting quality, Philips Lumileds has introduced a new bin method in its new mid-power LED product line. Aside from combining Mac Adams Eclipse within the ANSI BIN, binning can be even more sophisticated with 1/9 Micro Binning Color Structure. In addition, the company is also promoting hot color targeting, a technology that calculates LED components color deviation under hot temperatures to avoid mid-power LED color components from deviating under high temperatures.

Philips Lumileds is the first company to release hot color targeting technology and 1/9 micro binning color structure into mid-power LED bin specs to ensure clients will not encounter color deviations when using the product, said Zhou. At the same time clients can enjoy convenience from simplified designs. From Philips Lumileds product line, it can be observed LUXEON 3014 and LUXEON 3030 2D have both introduced hot color targeting binning and 1/9 micro binning color structure.

Philips Lumileds ambition in entering the mid-power market and differentiating its products can be observed from the launch of large number and more sophisticated binning mid-power LED products. In 2014, the mid-power LED market will continue high growth, especially in general lighting and indoor lighting markets including retrofit bulb, down light, troffers and others, said Zhou. Some high bay and low bay light clients have also started trying to introduce mid-power LEDs into their products. As lighting technology and materials advances, Philips Lumileds will also be continually improving mid-power LED lighting quality and various product functions.
