Colorado Experiments with LED Tunnel Light

The Colorado Department of Transportation is testing new in-pavement LED lighting, according to a report by Community Radio for Northern Colorado.

Lighting has been installed on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 close to Hidden Valley and the Twin Tunnels. This is the first site in Colorado where the lights are used.

If the LED tunnel lighting pilot project proves successful, lighting in other road infrastructures will also be replaced. One of the lighting requirements for the project is the LED lights need to come with 10-year warranty, said CDOT’s Tracy Trulove.

In pavement LED installations are relatively new measures, and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration noted “these treatments show promise for improving safety but comprehensive effectiveness evaluations are not yet available.”
