Epistar Takes Legal Actions to Protect Its LED Filament Patents

In addition to our witness of the raid at Light and Building 2018, LEDinside also learnt a low-key move from Epistar, who according to sources had reached out to dozens of exhibitors on-site regarding Epistar’s intellectual property rights. 

Demand for LED filament light bulbs in the US market is expected to soar in 2018, as users start replacing halogen lamps that may be phased out by 2020. A similar trend is expected in Europe as LED filaments resemble traditional tungsten filaments while featuring more design options, plus their cost is reaching the sweet point.

Considering their popularity in Europe, it is not a surprise that the Taiwanese LED chip giant seeks to protect its proprietary technologies.

Details such as how many companies Epistar reached out to stay undisclosed, but it has stirred up people's interest in Epistar’s filament patents in areas other than US.

Unlike the harsh action we covered earlier, Epistar is rumored to have taken a different path to enforce its IP right and leverage its technology and manufacturing capability. Both have demonstrated Taiwanese companies’ manufacturing capability of LED filament bulbs and the strength and value of their intellectual properties.

The company has filed three patent infringement litigations in US, and has granted licenses to Supertrend and QLS, according to its previous press release.
