Focusing on the Perfect Pixel: Merck Presents Trend-Setting, Efficient Solutions for all Display Applications at the IMID and the FPD

•    licristal® PS-VA for pioneering display technologies: Vivid images at minimal power consumption
•    licrivue® reactive mesogens: Enabling convenient 3D TV and enhancing display performance
•    WR Patinal® hydro- and oleophobic coating materials: For outstanding smooth, clean and responsive surfaces for touch screens

Merck will be presenting its innovative portfolio of display materials at two major display industry events in Asia in October. As a leader in all areas of LC display applications, Merck will be underscoring its motto “The Perfect Pixel” from October 9 to 11 at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) Exhibition in Seoul, Korea, and from October 31 to November 2 at the Flat Panel Displays International (FPD) in Yokohama, Japan.

With licristal®, Merck offers liquid crystal mixtures for flat screens, notebooks, tablet PCs and smartphones. Comprising VA (vertical alignment), IPS (in-plane switching), FFS (fringe field switching) and PS-VA (polymer stabilized vertical alignment) Merck’s licristal® range provides for all trend-setting display technologies. Especially PS-VAtechnology stands for excellent contrast, rapid switching times and up to 25% more light transmission. The results are impressively vivid images and minimal power consumption.

Blue Phase is a future LC technology that streamlines the production process for LC displays as it not requires orientation layers. Nevertheless, it offers switching times under one millisecond and maximal contrast with minimal viewing angle dependence.

Performing similar to liquid crystals, licrivue® reactive mesogens (RM) are used for 3D displays. Applied in IPS compensation films or Negative Dispersion RMM (ND-RMM; RMM: Reactive Mesogen Mixtures) for so-called Achromatic Quarter Wave Films (AQWF), they also enhance essential display functions in LCDs or OLED displays used in TVs, tablet PCs, smartphones or navigation devices, providing clearer images and an optimal contrast and color viewing angle dependence.

The WR substances in Merck’s Patinal® range of evaporation materials have been especially designed for the production of hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings. They equip all kinds of flat-panels, touch panels and touch-screen displays with abrasion-resistant, easy fingerprint removal and easy-to-clean surfaces while simultaneously allowing for an extraordinary ease of operation. WR Patinal® impresses with a low sliding angle and low contact angle hysteresis (θa-θr), resulting in even smoother, cleaner and outstanding responsive surfaces.

Under the brand name isishape® Merck supplies highly efficient, environmentally friendly structuring concepts. Applied to touch panels as well as to flexible displays, isishape®HiperEtch® permits custom-tailored, extremely fast selective structuring of antireflective coatings, passivation layers, transparent conductive materials, EL backlights and OLEDs.

For LC display backlighting and creative LED light applications Merck’s isiphor® range comprises a wide color range of phosphor materials. Regardless of particle size or color, all isiphor® materials share perfect color rendering, excellent energy efficiency and extraordinary stability, even under extreme conditions.

Including the latest small molecules for evaporation processes as well as soluble material systems for printing processes, Merck’slivilux® portfolio provides for all OLED applications, ranging from smartphone displays to large-area video walls. livilux® materials combine extreme durability, outstanding efficiency and high purity.

lisicon® stands for material solutions for organic thin film transistors (OTFT), comprising organic semiconductors, dielectrics or materials for surface treatment. The lisicon® range is playing a leading role in the further development of flexible displays and OLED applications.

IMID exhibition attendees will find Merck in Hall 1, Booth 2066.
FPD International attendees will find Merck at Booth 1401.

For most of history, humans used flames to generate light. Eventually, they discovered that a super-heated metal element in a light bulb could produce useful illumination, only for this technology to be superseded by the LED. One common featur... READ MORE
