Indian Union Territory Puducherry Delivers Cheap LEDs to Every Household

Puducherry, an Indian Union Territory, recently completed distributing low cost LED bulbs to every household, according to a Deccan Chronicle report.

The project was rolled out by Demand Side Management based Efficient Lighting Program (DLEP) in February to replace all incandescent bulbs with LEDs. Nearly 73.5 million 7 watt LEDs were distributed to the 245,000 households in the region that has a population of close to 1.24 million.

Residential LED lighting upgrades are expected to save Punducherry 48.75 million units of energy annually. India is expected to reduce energy consumption by 14 percent through LED lighting upgrades by 2019, said Sunil Sikka, president of Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturers Association of India (ELCOMA) and president, Havells India Limited.
