Cree, Inc. and Philips have joined force in a comprehensive, worldwide LED patent cross-license agreement, aiming to further accelerate the growth of the LED lighting market. The agreement includes patents from both parties in the fields of blue LED chip technology, white LEDs and phosphors (including remote phosphors), control systems, LED luminaires and lamps ,LED backlighting of LCDs and patents in the Philips LED Luminaire Licensing Program.

ON Semiconductor introduces an offline LED driver that integrates power factor correction (PFC) and isolated step-down AC-DC power conversion in a single stage.It supplies for applications such as LED-based street, low bay, wall packs and architectural lighting. The NCL30001 offers a reduced component count, lower cost solution that supports higher overall system efficiency in LED power.

Lumex expands its TitanBrite line of high-power LED technology in 2-, 3- and 5W capacities, which will offer high intensity light of up to 58, 210 and 300 lumens respectively. Compared with similar high-power LEDs, the new TitanBrite products can provide up to a 30 percent improvement in heat dissipation performance and a 60 percent enhancement in ESD protection.

Maxim provides LED drivers with PWM intensity control for applications. Using the serial interface to send the LED driver a command to change the register bits for the corresponding LED，the intensity can be normally controlled. The number of bits ranges from 4 to 8bits, equals to 16 to 256 intensity levels. Other Maxim LED drivers are carried out by adjusting the amount of the constant current sinking through an open-drain LED port.

Samsung released its range of LED-backlit LCD monitors. The new range has “no or few” environmentally hazardous materials, no lead or mercury and have 40% reduced power draw.

Optiled Japan Ltd will introduce a string-like LED lamp, "CabLED," which is available for ornaments and indirect illumination. It's made by lining up LED packages in thermoplastic polyurethane at an interval of 30mm. It is designed for being installed in a narrow space. And it can be cut in increments of 180mm.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and Infineon Technologies both champion the cause of sustainable development and environmental protection. In collaboration with the OSRAM partner network LED Light for you, the German company Diana Electronic Systems has developed an energy-efficient LED lamp for the Global Nature Fund to be used in Sri Lanka. Local fishermen will use the lamps instead of their environmentally harmful kerosene lamps when fishing at night.

IXYS Corp. has introduced the LDS8710/11, LDS8720/24/26 LED drivers to eliminate the external Schottky diode normally used in the rectification loop. The LDS8710 drives a string of 10 LEDs with factory-preset maximum LED current values of 20-, 25- and 30mA with 1% accuracy, and uses pulse-width modulation dimming to adjust LED brightness. They are designed for  LCD display backlight applications such as automotive displays, GPS, netbooks, laptop PCs, tablet computers and industrial and medical displays.

Tyco Electronics launched a new Type CM solderless LED socket. It’s available for integration of the Cree XLamp MP-L multichip LED into light fixtures. The socket provides a termination for six 0.60mm2 connection pads,mounted on the top of the LED. To comply with wire or board applications, it is offered in two versions, the wire termination version and the board termination version. Each is offered with or without attachment features for optics.

Oxley Developments acquired a British Royal Navy aircraft carrier contract from Northrop Grumman Corporation, to provide engineering LED services for the ships’ navigation and signaling lights for the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.  

Philips Lumileds Lighting Company has ordered an additional AIXTRON G5 HT MOCVD reactor. According to Mike Pugh, Chief Procurement Officer of Philips Lumileds, the G5 system’s fully automated operations through integrated wafer handling causes their attention, so they choose G5 system at their San Jose facility.

The new Hitachi UltraThin LED models thickness are less than two inches and use the latest high-efficiency LED technology while delivering stunning Full HD 1080p 120Hz picture quality. Compared with conventional LCD models, these models are mercury-free and ENERGY STAR® 4.1 qualified, consuming less power without compromising on image brightness or color vibrancy.

Bridgelux released neutral white versions of ES and RS LEDs, with a colour temperature of 4,100K. ES devices offer 400, 800 and 1,200 lm, while RS device delivers add up to 3,400 lm, expanding the existing 3,100 lm warm white and 4,500 lm cool white RS range. ES and RS LEDs are square: respectively 25 and 50mm across. There is also a 'star' version of ES.RS devices operate at 2.1A with a forward voltage of 26V.

Osram Sylvania will introduce LED lamp to take a share of the market in August. The lamp uses 12 watts, 80 percent less electricity than the standard 60-watt incandescent, and emits nearly as much light. It's supposed to last 25,000 hours.          

Avago produced HLMP-Ex1A/1B-xxxDV (15°) and HLMP-Ex3A/3B-xxxDV (30°) to follow the European Standard EN 12966-1 for variable message traffic signs. And they are Pb-free and RoHS-6 compliant. These 5mm extra bright LEDs are available in red and amber colors. The maximum LED junction temperature limit of +130°C makes high temperature operation in bright sunlight conditions possible. To reduce the effects of long term exposure to direct sunlight, the lamp epoxy uses UV inhibitors.

Samsung Electronics America Inc. introduced 50 Series LED-backlit monitors. These monitors have four sizes , the 20 inch, BX2050, 21.5 inch BX2250, 23 inch BX2350 and 24 inch BX2450,and each delivers a >95% sRGB color gamut and 170 degree horizontal viewing angle. They contain Samsung’s “Magic Angle” technology, so no matter what angle the image is viewed from, the user can tailor settings to maintain full contrast and color depth.

The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) conferred the gold award, which is the top award at the International Design Excellence Awards 2010 (IDEA 2010) to Panasonic Corporation for its EVERLEDS LED light bulbs (standard E26 base and compact E17 base).

Vizio provided some details on its 2010 3D TVs, including showing the first 3D model for the U.S. market to offer passive glasses technology. According to Vizio, there exists no 72-inch screen size anymore; the release date has been postponed from "August" to "Q4" of this year; the "XVT Pro" designation has changed to "XVT3D"; and instead of incorporating Bluetooth technology, the glasses will rely on infrared like those of other TV makers.
