Applied Materials, Inc. and Tokyo Electron Limited announced a definitive agreement to create a global innovator in semiconductor and display manufacturing technology via an all-stock combination which values the new combined company at approximately US$29 billion (¥2.8 trillion). This combination, which has been unanimously approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies, brings together complementary leading technologies and products to create an expanded set of capabilities in precision materials engineering and patterning that are strategically important for customers.

San'an Optoelectronics announced on September 25th that the company's wholly owned subsidiary Suncore Photovoltaic Technology Co. drew up an equity fund of RMB$200 million to establish a factory in Xiamen.

The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free trade Zone to be launched at the end of this month will be lifting a 13 year ban on game console sales in the zone that is expected to benefit IR LED manufacturers. Internet restrictions will also be lifted within the zone. The zone approved in August by the Chinese government was established to attract foreign investments.

Samsung announced it will be launching a bendable OLED smartphone in Oct., 2013, according to reports by Verge, Gizmodo, BBC and others. The flexible OLED screens will be introduced into the smartphone model GALAXY Note 3, and only a limited number will be sold. As the first OLED smartphone to enter the market, it is expected to catalyze OLEDs commercial applications.

Taiwan LED packaging manufacturer Advanced Optoelectronic Technology (AOT) after being listed on the Gretai Securities Market on June 25th 2013, on September 25th held a shareholder’s meeting to appoint new chairman to the board. AOT stated that due to the increased demand after the company was listed.

Aiming at international lighting design and lighting industry for next generation, TrendForce hopes to transform the sophisticate preference in the lighting world into a commonsense for more people to live in.

Taiwan LED packaging manufacturer Advanced Optoelectronic Technology (AOT) performance for 2013 backlight orders is stable. Among the backlight sold, large sized backlights had the best performance. The company has a combined consolidated revenue from January of this year till August of NT$ 4.3 billion, an increase of 35.02 percent from last year. AOT pointed out that since the main markets are in China, Japan, and Korea, entering into the second half of this year customer backlight orders remained steady and has order visibility till the end of this year.

Vertically integrated Taiwanese LED manufacturer Lextar Electronics Corp. has maintained an utilization rate of 80% and order visibility of about 1-1.5 months. Affected by mediocre demands for large sized backlight orders in 3Q13, LED manufacturers are closely paying attention to potential orders from U.S. and Europe Christmas season and stock up prior to the Chinese Lunar New Year. Demands are much better for direct-type LED TV and small/mid sized backlight, according to Lextar. In comparison side-view type LED TV and notebook backlight demands remained low.
