GE Helps Increase Security and Reduce Energy Cost for Moscow's Local Railway

Russian Railways is the second largest rail network in the world with over 85,200km of track and 976,116 employees. Responsible for 42 per cent of Russia's total freight traffic and 32 per cent of passenger traffic, Russian Railways carries nearly 1 billion people and over 1 billion tonnes of freight annually across 11 time zones.

Russian Railways wanted a complete outdoor lighting overhaul, including bridges, tunnels, platforms and turnstile pavilions. The main objectives of the project were to reduce energy consumption, thus increasing profitability and to improve visibility and safety, enabling the company to provide a better service.


The Expectation
Importantly, the company needed a solutions provider that not only had a comprehensive range of quality products to suit the varied applications across its estate, but was also an experienced and competent turnkey partner that could deliver expert consultation within a tight time frame.

The company is a major contributor to the fast-growing Russian economy and aims to meet the market demand for rail transport whilst improving efficiency and the quality of its service.

The Solution

GE Lighting offered a full turnkey service from initial brief through to specification and installation. The first stage of the process was to listen to Russian Railways' objectives around both the performance requirements of the new lighting and the logistical aims of the project – in this particular case a tight time frame was crucial.

Then, in partnership with IG Volga, GE Lighting conducted an extensive lighting audit of Russian Railways' lighting systems and put forward a complete LED solution. Providing detailed lighting calculations and impressive profitability projections, GE Lighting included Russian Railways experts in the specification process and tailored its offering to the distinct application areas. Individual LED solutions were identified for use on the platforms, trackside, at turnstile pavilions and in the railway tunnels based upon the unique requirements of each environment.

Results and Benefits

The result of GE Lighting's channelled LED solutions means that Russian Railways is on track to benefit from an annual energy saving of 1.4 million kW. In addition, Russian Railways' savings are set to increase further with reduced maintenance costs, as all of the LED fixtures installed offer superb reliability and extra long rated lifespans.

So far, over 1,100 LED fixtures have been installed across the project with a view to rolling out the retrofit across a larger proportion of Russian Railways' estate in the near future, making it one of the biggest LED projects in the EMEA region.

Products and Technologies Used

For use on platforms, trackside and at turnstile pavilions, GE Lighting specified a combination of Okapi, R250 and Area Lighter LED fixtures. All of the fixtures incorporate GE Lighting's advanced optical reflector technology, which greatly increases the control over the direction and level of illumination. The advanced control capability increases efficiency by reducing light spillage and also reduces glare to improve visibility.

What's more, the fixtures are extremely reliable with minimum IP65 ratings, IK08 ratings and rated lives of 50,000 hours. In addition, the minimum functional ambient temperature ranges of -30°C to +35°C, ensure all of the fixtures can cope with the adverse conditions often experienced across Russian Railways' estate.

For use in tunnels, GE Lighting specified its new TLBt single module LED luminaire. The TLBt is engineered to save both energy and operational costs, whilst providing high quality light output that improves safety within tunnels. With a rated life of 60,000 hours and IP66 rating for electrical and optical compartments, the TLBt is extremely robust and perfectly suited for hardwearing applications.
