The eighth annual SYLVANIA Socket Survey, a nationwide measure of public attitudes about energy-efficient lighting and awareness of lighting trends, was released today by LEDVANCE. The industry-benchmark survey found lighting to be one of the top forms of smart technology Americans own, with a 40% increase since 2015. The results also showed more than 60% of Americans believe smart lighting fits their lifestyle, and 55% confirmed they’re likely to purchase smart lighting when they need new bulbs.

Product development in the LED industry has changed significantly over the past years, shifting from boosting lumen efficiency to prioritizing light quality. Lumileds latest LUXEON Stylist Series, designed to meet different commercial and retail lighting demands, especially emphasizes CoB LED color performance. Compared to the company’s older generation products, the new LEDs are incorporating TM-30 color parameter measurements into the design process.

Diminishing size of the annual Guangzhou International Lighting Fair in China was first observed in June 2015, but the extent of the shrinking fair accelerated in 2016. Despite fewer international companies displaying their products at the annual show this year, it still attracted a large number of visitors. In the LED industry where large manufacturers are constantly switching businesses, staying or leaving the industry are all market strategies to embrace market changes. The global average sales price (ASP) of 40-watt equivalent LED light bulbs in June fell 0.2% compared with the prior month to US$9.5, says the latest price report from LEDinside, a division of TrendForce. The global ASP of 60-watt equivalent light bulb also dropped 0.1% monthly to US$12.9.

EVERLIGHT filed a declaratory judgment action against Nichia Corporation (“Nichia”) for invalidity and non-infringement of U.S. Patent Nos. 5,998,925 and 7,531,960 in the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Michigan in 2012. These two patents are directed to YAG phosphor being used in LEDs and phosphor concentration. The court on January 19, 2016 denied Nichia’s motions and confirmed the April 22, 2015 jury verdict that all asserted claims of Nichia’s patents were invalid. In addition to the U.S. court ruling, from 2014, EVERLIGHT has continued to receive favorable rulings in Japan and Germany that Nichia’s patents are invalid.

The value of the global LED market has been growing at a crawling pace as demand for backlight LEDs contracts. Automotive LEDs, however, are one of the few sizable application markets that are developing rapidly along with other smaller markets for niche industrial LED products. The latest analysis by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, finds the replacement of traditional light bulbs with LED light sources continues steadily in the automotive lighting market despite the slowing growth in the regional automobile markets worldwide during the second quarter. While the percentage of LED-based products in developed markets continues to expand, emerging markets are also seeing gradual adoption. LEDinside projects that the value of the exterior automotive LED market will reach US$1.57 billion this year and will grow at a CAGR of 6% in the 2016~2020 period.
