Having further developed its successful Phaser 3000, Osram has added the Phaser 500 to its portfolio and is continuing to develop this laser-excited phosphor technology which was first introduced in 2012. The upgraded phaser with a record luminance of 3700 cd/mm² and smaller size compared to the predecessor version can be used in optical fibers with a diameter of less than one millimeter. Phaser 500 is therefore ideal for endoscopy, boroscopy and measurement applications that require a particularly high luminance. Holger Laabs, Product Marketing Medical and Industrial SSL at Osram summed up the benefits of the new product as follows: “In further developing the phaser we have achieved a considerable improvement in performance and at the same time made operating the phaser easier for the user”.

Epistar announced it will be raising certain LED chip costs by 15% in mid- May 2016, which excited certain media and investors, who projected LED chip prices would soar. There is nothing to support this theory, though. More than a month has gone by, and none of the other manufacturers have raised prices. A closer inspection raises questions on the LED chip pricing strategy, and whether it will reach the aim of reducing the company’s revenue losses requires further observations, however, the company is at risk of losing clients.
