Amtran: Integration in Supply Chain Could Accelerate the Popularity of LED-Backlit TVs - LEDforum 2009 Report (1)

At the LEDforum 2009, AmTRAN Chairman & CEO Alpha Wu pointed out that LED-backlit LCD TVs, which boast many advantages such as low energy consumption, high image quality and slim profile, is gradually becoming the design trend of LCD TVs. Optimistic about the LED-backlit TV market in 2010, AmTRAN projects the market penetration rate of such TVs will substantially grow to 20%. With Taiwan’s manufacturers joining the supply chain, the cost of LED-backlit TVs could be effectively controlled and the popularity rate sequently boosted, the company explained.

Chairman & CEO Alpha Wu of AmTRAN Technology

After the hot sales of Vizio 55” LCD TV which firstly incorporates the Direct Type LED backlight, the company will soon release its new 47” Direct Type LED-backlit TV to capture the hot season market during the Christmas holiday. The company will continue introducing new products in 2010 to cover TV sizes ranging from 24” to 60”, with the target shipment of LED-backlit TVs as between 1million to 2 million sets.

According to market survey, Wu further noted, the main reasons why consumers are buying LED-backlit TVs rest in the improved energy efficiency, accurate image delivery, slim look and attracting design; particularly, a 55” LED-backlit TV consumes only 170W of power. And consumers’ acceptable price gap between LED-backlit TV and its alternatives is below 100 dollars.

Lastly, Wu suggests that integrity in LED supply chain could be a measure to reduce the cost of LED-backlit TV production. In the whole complicated supply chain which covers upstream LED chip, LED packaging, LED backlight module, TV panel and TV sets, manufacturers in each chain wish to get the highest gross profit, which has resulted in the minimum production volume. In the future, if brand TV makers could lead the integrity of the whole LED supply chain and unite the upstream and downstream manufacturers together, the popularity of LED-backlit TVs should be expected to get accelerated.
