The 2018 Internationl Micro LED Display Conference has gathered AUO, eLux, Nationstar, Lextar, X-Celeprint, Veeco, Lumiode, San’an, TOPCON, Chipone, PlayNitride, Orbotech, Sony and ITRI to share Micro LED related technologies and future prospect. The conference has mainly focused on Micro LED epitaxy, transfer, color conversion, detection, drive and equipment.
Vincent Lee, the lecturer of Lumiode, has mentioned that the company’s integration of LED and Silicon TFT technology in Micro LED production process could reduce manufacturing costs and solve quantification problems. Besides, the brightness in Micro display applications could be increased from 1,000 cd/m2 of current brightness specifications to 10,000,000 cd/m2.
Troy Hsu, the Vice President of San’an, said that the future challenges for Micro LED production process will be epitaxy technology, red chip, wavelength uniformity, V-I curve control, the mass transfer technology UPH, equipment precision, chip bonding technology, production yield rate, inspection technology after transferring, maintenance technology and processing costs.
Kazuto Nishikawa, the lecturer of TOPCON, introduced the use of testing equipment to conduct Micro LED color and uniformity inspection. Optical simulation software and algorithm are used to do Mura elimination analysis in order to achieve effective control of color uniformity.
Yi-Jun Beni Wang, the lecturer of Chipone, mentioned that driver IC plays an important role in Micro LED display technology. Driver IC and driving circuit can be designed to achieve De-mura effect.
Yun-Li Charles Li, the CEO of PlayNitride, shared the company’s technology development progress and challenges of PixeLED Display, mentioning the technology concept of mass transfer and fast and accurate maintenance technology.
Ray Tsao, the lecturer of Israel-based Orbotech, said that Orbotech’s testing equipment can provide Micro LEDs’ online inspection on backplane, epi-wafer, mass transfer and repair processes with very high accuracy.
Tatsuya Aizawa, from Sony, introduced Crystal LED products at CES 2018 and the current stage of installation, and explained the technology and characteristics of Crystal LED Integrated Structure.
Finally, Dr. Chien-Chung Lin, from ITRI, introduced Micro LED technology and prospect. ITRI developed Micro LED products in 2009. In 2014, single-color product was released. In 2016, full-color product was launched. So far, different substrates (CMOS and PI) have been approached. From the past experience, the future of Micro LED will accelerate the development and application with the breakthrough of technology.
