California-based decorative furnishings company Light Energy Studio has designed a new Light Energy LED Cocktail Tables studded with different colour changing RGB LED Lighting to change the entire look of the room, especially when it is dark. The light effects can be controlled via controllers which come with each table. Different colour changing LEDs offer different illumination effects. It is available in a choice of black, white, or brushed aluminium finish.

Reportedly, Epson has selected Cypress Semiconductor’s CapSense® capacitive touch solution to implement buttons and LED controls in its new Epson Artisan 725, Stylus Photo PX720WD, Stylus Photo TX720WD, and Stylus Photo PX660 multi-function printers. GE has developed a 9-watt GE Energy Smart® LED bulb to replace a 40-watt incandescent bulb in desk, bedside or hallway lamps, as the first standard incandescent shaped (A-line) LED bulb to earn an ENERGY STAR® rating.   The GE Energy Smart® 9-watt LED has a unique fin-like design, allowing it to direct light downward on the intended surface and all around, not just out the top of the lampshade.

Two new versions of the LED with different coverage of the color space according to the sRGB standard are available to meet various customer requirements.

Philips cooperates with the Rijkswaterstaat (RWS - the Dutch highway authority), contractors Gebroeders Van der Lee and consultants Spectrum, has installed LED lighting along a 7km-length of the A44, one of the busy highways of Amsterdam. The installation will be officially operated in February.

Long Island, Smithtown in America is replacing over 10 percent of its streetlights with LED.   According to Traffic Safety Director Mitchell Crowley, who is overseeing the project, the new lights, paid for with federal stimulus money through a grant of more than $1 million, will convert about 1,500 of the town's 11,600 streetlights to LED. So far, the town has installed about 200 light fixtures. The switch is expected to save about $225,000 a year or $2.2 million over the fixtures' 10-year life.

Toshiba has shown off Power PC1 series TV, which are the first LCD television that has an integrated battery backup. With a rechargeable battery, this new product is capable of delivering around two hours of TV watching time without power, which can cater for users who live in areas with unclean or sketchy power sources that are prone to blackouts and power fluctuations. It plans to offer the Power PC1 series in 32-inch and 24-inch sizes.  

Cree has released XLamp® CXA20 LED Array, which is regard as the industry’s first lighting-class LED array, aiming at accelerating the LED lighting revolution and can enable a 60 watt A-lamp equivalent while consuming just 11 watts.   The CXA20 array is capable of simplifying the manufacturing process for customers who require a single component in their light engine design with a single, uniform optical source, compact 22mm x 22mm footprint, and simple 2-screw attachment.  

According to an interview from South Korea, bell pepper farmers are using LED lights used as a substitute for sunlight to grow the plant. One famer in the interview pointed that they are desperately lacking sunlight because of the recent climate change. So they installed LED lights as a substitute.   For the past eight months this farm has been experimenting with using LED lights to grow bell peppers.

Taiwan tools and hardwares supplier 3ST Industry Co., Ltd., has launched all-purpose LED work lights with rechargeable Li-ION battery power pack.   The new lights feature 100000 hours life, ultra bright and mercury free. Support beam mode for inspection light; flood mode for area task lighting; ultraviolet light for detecting and verifying those are supposed to be invisible to naked eyes.

Osram Opto Semiconductors is aligned with Wavien Inc. to develop RGB LEDs for pocket projectors and picoprojectors small enough to integrate in cellphones. Osram's LED technology with the LED light recycling technology of Wavien, a licensor of technologies for enhancing lighting will be combined in the new LEDs.

Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is applying for U.S. Energy Star certification on the test of LED lighting products. According to Chuang Po-nien, deputy director of the ITRI's Center for Measurement Standards (CMS), the accreditation is expected to be achieved in the first quarter of 2011. The CMS is an organization authorized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs's Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection to conduct testing for products, including LED lighting, seeking national CNS certification.

According to CRS Electronics, its LED MR16 lamps currently have become the only LED MR16 approved for a rebate under two US undisclosed major electric utilities’   incentive program offered to their commercial customers.   It’s said that the two major utilities service a combined area of more than 100,000 sq. mi. in 40 counties within the continental United States. Therefore, it’s an opportunity for CRS to capitalize on these rebate programs.

The Haxton Way Trail, for the Lummi Nation Indian Reservation, Lummi Nation, Washington has selected Carmanah Technologies Corporation’s 70 EverGEN 1710 solar LED lighting systems to improve the safety of pedestrians that use the popular three-mile long pathway, which stretches across environmentally-sensitive wetlands. The Haxton Way Trail follows a network of protected wetlands and wetland complexes, which account for almost half of the Lummi Reservation's total upland area.

Soitec and Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) has joined force to develop engineered gallium nitride (GaN) substrates. The cooperation will combine with Sumitomo Electric's sophisticated GaN wafer manufacturing technology and Soitec's unique Smart Cut layer transfer technology.The engineered substrates retain the original, high crystalline quality of Sumitomo Electric's GaN wafer at a lower cost.

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has published their 2011-2015 business plan. Their R&D strategy includes four priority items, one of them being OLED Lighting. Their plan is to produce 80lm/W 40,000 hours white OLEDs in 2015. They say that the cost will be ¥4 per lm - which means $3.8 for the 80lm/W device - but they do not specify the size (area) of those OLEDs.

FZTECH Inc. releases the availability of T8 Light Emitting Diode (LED) Switching Dimmable light tubes – the LED T8 tubes come in ten models. The three sizes of tube vary in length from 580mm to 1200mm. The LED T8 Tubes are designed to replace the equivalent Fluorescent Lamps (FL) available in markets today. Using lower wattage compared with the original product (Input varies between 7W on the low brightness model to 22W on the high brightness model).

Mitsubishi Electric  has installed an 800-inch Diamond Vision large-scale display system at Hiratsuka Stadium in Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, to display textual and graphic information as well as live videos and slow-motion replays. It’s considered as the first large-scale LED screen installed at Hiratsuka City's multi-use athletics stadium, also the home stadium of J. League Division 1 soccer club Shonan Bellmare.

It’s estimated that the new GE Evolve LED street lights will reduce the city’s energy use by 28 million watts a year.
