The opening and closing ceremonies of the Guangzhou Asian Games will be held in a newly constructed half-stadium in Haixinsha Square. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ OSLON SSL LEDs were chosen to light up the exterior of the venue. These LEDs were used to produce a variety of colours, highlighting the gill-like side openings of the half-stadium, flanked by the city’s UFO-like opera house and the latticed Guangzhou TV Tower.

Visualization specialist Barco has released a new line of LED-lit, DLP-based video walls with an improved LED engine. ON Semiconductor has launched three new products targeted at the automotive market sector at Electronica 2010.   The new NCV7321 is a fully featured local interconnect network (LIN) transceiver designed to interface between a LIN protocol controller and the physical bus in low data rate in-vehicle networking (IVN) applications.

Bentleyville is building what will become the only steel fabricated Christmas tree in the United States standing over 120 feet tall. And rolls of LED lights will be wrapped around the tree as crews finished each section. The 50,000 LED lights are expected to use 37 amps of power. It’s said that over 200,000 people attended the Bentleyville Tour of Lights in 2009, and this year, crews are expecting the tree will draw an even bigger turnout.

Micrel Inc. has introduced the MIC3202, a new step-down HBLED driver with high-side current sense, suits for MR-16 lamps and other general illumination applications.   The MIC3202 has capacity for handling up to eight 1A HBLEDs in series at over 90 percent efficiency with ±5 percent current accuracy from input voltages of 6V to 37V.

The new Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) of Troy, NY, USA has arranged a test bed for first LED bulbs on a key building of RPI’s campus.   Led by director Robert Karlicek, the Smart Lighting ERC worked with campus officials to replace some of the conventional incandescent bulbs in overhead lights with LED bulbs in the nine-story George M. Low Center for Industrial Innovation (CII).
