The SSL industry has seen substantial growth recently that is only to increase over the next few years. During the Taiwan Solid State Lighting forum at Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS) 2014 on March 20th, industry experts shared their insight on the direction the SSL industry will take in the future. Panelists discussing the future development and challenges of SSL included Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Director and Professor Robert F. Karlicek, Jr., lighting designer and Director of Professional Lighting Designers’ Association James Wallace, Research Director for Panasonic Takuya Komoda, Chairman of Lextar Electronics David Su, and Vice Chairperson of International Affairs Committee Michael Ng.

Chuang-Hsin Greenergy Co. takes a unique approach to environmentally friendly lighting design. Since 2013, the company has been producing LED lighting products using bamboo and wood as their main materials. The latest member of the Osram Soleriq family produces 2000 lumen from a surface with a diameter of only nine millimeters. Harvard Engineering, has launched its next generation of off-the-shelf LED light engines. The Gen II range consists of; 24mm and 40mm wide strip light engines in both high and low voltage variants, 2 panel light engines and a circular light engine.The strip light engines; LER1, LER2, LER3 and LER4 are available in 280mm and 560mm lengths, with Zhaga compliance. The low voltage panel light engines are 270mm x 270mm (LER5) and 242mm x 260mm (LER6), LEC1, the circular light engine, comes in 200mm Diameter. NTC temperature sensor options and Emergency options are available on LEC1, LER3, LER4, LER5 & LER6.

The new LED stainless steel bollard light is equipped with a standard reflector to help distribute the light downwards. Recently Green Choice LED completed a first of its kind solar powered streetlight project for the city of Shenandoah, Texas in late January. Now, the streets of Shenandoah Valley subdivision are illuminated by eighty-one solar powered LED streetlights.

Long lifespan is one of the main selling points for LED bulbs, but it could also be their downfall. The conversion will result in a 66 percent reduction in power consumption with an anticipated overall energy and maintenance savings of approximately US$1.2 million annually.
