Hot Picks of the Week April 7-11

As the world’s largest biennial lighting show, Light + Building 2014, concluded last week, LEDinside has followed up with additional in-depth on Asian, Europe and U.S. manufacturers. Also new this week, LEDs smaller than half the width of a DNA strand are proving to be more energy efficient. Research organization iRunway also notes some of the key LED patent holders in the industry. Philips and Osram Compete for Lighting Solution-based Multi-Year City Contracts

LEDs are tooted as having long lifespans, but as more traditional light sources are being switched out for SSL, manufacturers are realizing that long lifespans are not good for a sustainable business model. Therefore, companies such as Philips and Osram are looking into long-term installation contracts. Philips has secured such a contract with Washington’s transit authority to upgrade around 13,000 fixtures in parking lots, according to a recent Bloomberg report.

Chinese Researchers Develop Phosphor-free White Light from Nanopyramid LEDs

For the cool white NPW LEDs, the spectrum is similar to the conventional white LEDs obtained from the blue LEDs combined with yellow phosphors. The blue emission originates from the upper sidewalls of nanopyramids, and yellow light is mainly emitted from the lower ridges with respect to the base of nanopyramids.

Jim Campbell is an electronic artist who has been working with light sculptures for over 30 years. After graduating from M.I.T with degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics, he worked as an engineer in Silicon Valley. Intrigued by pixilated images, he decided to apply the same principles of low resolution to moving images. He began experimenting with perception and the amount of information required to make an image recognizable in the human mind.

Forepi Waves Goodbye to Financial Woes as Backlight Demands Rebound

Forepi has shaken off the financial troubles the company experienced in 4Q13. The Taiwanese LED epitaxial manufacturer benefited from strong large-size backlight demands. Consolidated revenue for 1Q14 hit NT $941 million (US $), up 9.85 percent QoQ and 0.35 percent YoY. March experienced staggering growth of 42.73 percent from February with revenue reaching 386 million, but dipped 3.67 percent from last year.

GE and Walmart Team Up for LED Lighting Transform on a Global Scale

Walmart announced plans today to purchase energy-efficient LED ceiling lighting fixtures for new supercenters in the United States, stores in Asia and Latin America, and Asda locations in the United Kingdom. The new fixtures will use 40 percent less energy than lighting sources historically used in stores, and will help further the retailer’s goal to reduce the kilowatt hour (kWh) per square foot of energy required to power Walmart’s buildings globally 20 percent by 2020. This is Walmart’s largest purchase of GE LED lighting to date, and the most recent example of leadership from Walmart and GE to find and scale innovative, energy-efficient lighting solutions.

Trifortune Orders AIXTRON System for GaN LEDs on Alternative Substrates

AIXTRON SE announced that Jiangsu Trifortune Electronic Technology Co. Ltd., China, has ordered an AIX G5 HT system to develop gallium nitride based high brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs). The AIXTRON system will be equipped to handle 56x2-inch wafers per run and will be installed at Trifortune’s R&D center. The developed process will be transferred to mass production in the Jiangsu area upon successful completion of the research.

Li-Fi Makes New Transmission Breakthrough

Harald Haas, Professor at the University of Edinburgh and Chief Science Officer (CSO) and co-founder of pureLiFi, and his team have made another breakthrough in Li-Fi by demonstrating that up to 1.1 gigabit per second (Gbps) can now be transmitted using light waves from micro LEDs over a distance of 10 meters using less than 0.5W power. This is only 5 percent of the power of a typical 10W LED light bulb.
