  The biggest lighting industry event, Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), ended successfully on 30th of October. During the event, there were more than 2,661 exhibitors from 37 countries and regions, including 146 Taiwanese exhibitors. Edison Opto also showcased smart-lighting-related AC modules and new COB series which used the latest TM-30 technique to attract customers’ attention.

Brightek entered the automotive LED lighting market in 2007, and all its high power LEDs are manufactured in Taiwan, while its low to mid-power LED products are produced in Shenzhen, China. Besides developing an integrated platform at the exhibition, the show organizers also assisted manufacturers in building partnerships, and providing buyers with a one-stop shopping platform that encompasses lighting equipment, LED package, and new LED technologies.

The ongoing improvement of efficacy, competence of SDCM control and color rendering index in LEDs accelerate high-end commercial lighting market’s development that demands higher light quality. High-end commercial lighting market mainly include museum, galleries and other exhibition lighting applications that primarily use downlights, projectors and reflectors.   LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, reports in its “High-end commercial and track lighting market” that the market scale of two frequently used luminaires for high-end commercial lighting, namely Downlight and Projectors and Reflectors (Par& Rs.) separately reaches US $1.88 billion and US $1.54 billion in 2016. It’s projected that the market scale of Downlight is to reach US $2.01 billion and Projector and Reflectors at US $1.59 billion in 2017.

Main players in the LED industry, and large volume of visitors attended the annual Guangzhou International Lighting Show 2016, which runs from June 9-12. Although, fewer big lighting brands from U.S., Europe and China attended the show this year, there were plenty of newcomers. Apple has been the main driver behind many new technology advancements, OLED technology has come under media center spotlight spurred by market rumors about upcoming OLED touchpad panels in the MacBook Pro, and curved screen smartphones. China Chinese automotive light’s development is still price-oriented when adopting LEDs. Current spec for interior automotive lights and RCL are similar with lighting LEDs and even backlight LEDs, the LED penetration rate is relatively high and similar to international level. As DRL is closely linked to the recognition of vehicles, it has seen rapid development in Chinese market over the past few years. Moreover, some Chinese automotive makers turn to low-power LEDs for DRL applications. Therefore, the market penetration of DRL in China rose to 47% in 2016.   Slow mid and high-power LED in Chinese automotive market: Due to the high technical requirement of high-power LED product segments, such as high / low beam and fog light. These light sources are mainly from international source and have low penetration rate.   US Car Market Supply Chain US automotive makers mainly adopt automotive lamps from Visteon and Hella. As North America is notorious for its tariff protection, automotive lamp factories and modules are constructed relatively close to each other, focusing on market opportunities and the reduction of assembly costs. Mexico is a popular location of such plants over the past few years.  As the suppliers of headlamps and tail lamps are not necessarily the same, the main concern lie in design and mass production ability. Meanwhile, the suppliers of tail light and interior lights are usually the same as the technical difficulties is relatively low and can be potentially purchased together.

Many leading manufacturers that provide innovative technology displayed their up-to-date solutions at OPIE’16, which took place from May 18 - 20 in Yokohama, Japan. Many products being showcased at LED Expo Thailand 2016 that took place from April 19-22, 2016 in Bangkok attracted more attention than others. Filament LED bulb is one of the most popular items, though it has only been introduced to the market a few years ago. Be it Taiwanese manufacturers, Chinese luminaire makers, Thai manufacturers and foreign companies   such as Philips, the launch of filament LEDs washed over Thailand’s lighting market. Aside from local labels that had entered the well-known local channel, HomePro, buyers are mainly distributors, contractors and tenders.

LED Expo Thailand 2016 that took place from April 19-22, 2016 at IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center in Bangkok, Thailand is the largest LED exhibition held in southeast Asian district. Compared to Singapore’s economic role as a hub, the Thailand-based LED exhibition emphasizes more on creating business opportunities for local manufacturers and international ones. Buyers are mainly local Thai manufacturers, foreign investors that focus on southeast Asian market as well as district distributors. Quite a few buyers are based in Vietnam and Singapore. Vietnam, at the same time, is also one of Taiwanese manufacturers’ targeting markets.

The rapid growth of Southeast Asia market has always been attractive to investors while local exhibitions create collaboration and partnership opportunities for foreign manufacturers taping into the market. Meanwhile, LED and lighting related exhibitions found exhibitors from southeast Asia, including Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan.

Micro LEDs are gaining traction in the LED industry since it is a technology that industry experts view as capable of breaking LCDs low light efficiency, and achieve “real LED display” technology. Current LCD designs are very inefficient in light output, with only an estimated 10% light emission. Light emitted from the LED backlight module has to travel through polarization filters, TFT, liquid crystals, and color filters, about 90% of light is trapped in these layered structures.

Several notable trends LEDinside observed at Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS) 2016, which took place at Nangang Exhibition Hall from April 12-16, 2016 in Taipei, was more manufacturers showcasing filament LED bulbs, smart lighting products, and an emphasis on reducing glare in luminaire designs.

Lextar’s booth highlighted more advanced lighting technology at the lighting show this year, including several IR LED solutions, automotive lighting and UV LED modules at Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS) 2016, which took place at Nangang Exhibition Hall from April 12-16, 2016 in Taipei.

British test lab Intertek has started to offer decorative LED Christmas light testing services in Taiwan, said company representatives at Taiwan International Lighting Show 2016 (TILS 2016) jointly organized by TAITRA, SEMI and ITRI that took place last week in Nangang Exhibition Hall Center, Taiwan.

Industrial lighting specialist Nanya Photonics and luminaire manufacturer China Electric (or also known as TOA Lighting) both featured smart LED hospital lighting at the four-day Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS 2016) that took place in Nangang Exhibition Hall, Taipei from April 12-16, 2016.

Miniaturization and rising efficiency in LED chip designs has initiated redesigns in heat sinks, which are becoming more compact and turning to new designs to achieve faster thermal dissipation, said MechaTronix General Manager Koen Vangorp during an interview with LEDinside at Taiwan International Lighting Show 2016 (TILS) that took place recently in Nangang Exhibition Hall, Taipei.

The LED market contracted for the first time in 2015, reporting a decline of 3%, due to drastic price cuts. However, the dire market condition is not expected to persist this year, said Roger Chu, Director of Research, LEDinside at a forum the company organized at Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei, Taiwan during Taipei International Lighting Show (TILS 2016), which runs from April 13-16, 2016.
