The ninth annual Taiwan International Lighting Show (TILS 2018) opened with much fanfare in Hall 1 of Taipei World Trade Center on 25 April. This year’s show has gathered 114 exhibitors and featured 420 display booths showcasing technologies under the categories of LED general lighting and smart lighting.

Taiwanese manufacturer Playnitride stunned visitors by exhibiting Micro LED displays. There are three color displays, white, green and full color. In addition, 0.89” display is used on watches, with about 169 ppi and blue LED chip in combination with phosphor. For 0.8” display, the display quality is improved to 230 ppi, with green LED chip. For full color 0.89” display, it adopts RGB LED chip combination, with about 103 ppi. Playnitride hopes to advance technology in the future to develop toward the commercialization of Micro LED display.

The investment in whole flat panel display industry by Chinese enterprises has amounted to more than $70 billion, and the production scale of display panel in China is expected to be the No.1 around the world by 2019 from the third place at present, as well as China will be the important driving engine for the growth of global display industry. Under this circumstance, the Society for Information Display (SID) sets up operations entity in China, outside of the United States for the first time, and organizes the international conference on Display Technology (ICDT). The second International Conference on Display Technology (ICDT) is held during April 9-12, 2018 in Guangzhou, China. ICDT 2018 is hosted jointly by the Society for Information Display (SID) Beijing Chapter, SID Taipei Chapter and SID Hong Kong Chapter, and organized by South China Normal University, South China University of Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Juhua Printed Display Technology Co. Ltd, HKUST State Key Laboratory on Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies, SID China, OE-A and Fuzhou University. ICDT 2018 attracts a large number of display prominent scientists, academia and enterprise elites in the field of display, focusing on 7 special topics and 17 symposium topics, also totally publishing 383 symposium papers (including oral, invited and poster presentations). In addition to the publication of technical papers, in order to promote the continuation of technology, the venue also provides exhibition booths and the opportunities for collaboration between start-ups and investors to enhance industrial exchanges.

After years of cross-line efforts from lighting, communication, and platform vendors, smart lighting has finally burgeoned, as shown by the exhibits at the 2018 Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (spring edition). 

With the biennial Frankfurt Light + Building Fair just closing, the number of exhibitors at 2018 Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring edition), held from April 6-9th, was much lower than last year, but many major lighting firms still set up booths at the fair to display their star products, such as T5 and T8 LED tubes by Forest Lighting, ceiling light and panel light by TCL Lighting, and filament lamp by Sky-Lighting. Some exhibitors displayed products targeting niche markets, underscoring their attempt to skip red-ocean competition amid the increasingly saturated lighting market.

The 10th edition of the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) was held from 6-9 April by Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). With more than 1,350 exhibitors from 13 countries and regions expected to take part this year, the fair included new participants from Canada, India, Macau and Malaysia. In line with trends in the lighting industry, four new thematic zones were launched this year to maximize business opportunities, namely Horticultural Lighting, Residential Lighting, Technical Lighting and Urban & Architectural Lighting.

As a Taiwan enterprise integrating LED R&D, production and sales as one, BRIGHTEK has focused on automotive LED market for many years. It exhibited a full series of automotive LED products and solutions at Shanghai ALE 2018 during March 28 to March 29. In the meantime, LEDinside had the opportunity to interview Zhong Xunhui, the special assistant of general manager in BRIGHTEK, who kindly shared BRIGHTEK’s development trend and plan in automotive LED market.

EVERLIGHT demonstrated monochromatic light LEDs that are widely applied for horticulture lighting. It developed a special series of products based on monochromatic light wavelength to cover PAR 450-745 nm from high to low power with SHWO 3535-ELB, 3030-ELB and 2835-ELB.

Highlights of Lextar for this year are high-power LED modules, LEDs for slim luminaire, and IR sensor modules. In particular, the new IR sensor modules were showcased for the first time. They feature 3D image recognition and can be used in 3D cameras. In addition to that, the company also showcased its automotive LEDs.

The fourth ALE have been holding in Shanghai Automobile Exhibition Center from 2018 March 28 to 29. According to LEDinside survey, there have been around 180 manufacturers, including Driver IC, LED package, module and automotive lamp manufacturers, etc. The show mainly focuses on the industry chain of original equipment automotive lighting. Many well-known international companies, such as Texas Instruments, OSRAM, Lumileds, Nichia, Seoul Semiconductor, Dominant, Hella and Valeo and Taiwanese companies, such as Lite-on Technology, Btightek, Lextar and Marcoblock and Chinese companies, such as Honglitronic, Sunpuled, Yuliang LED, Xingyu, Tianchong and Jiangsu Wenguang have took part in this show.

Connected lighting is definitely a main focus at Light and Building 2018. While most of the lighting companies emphasize the smartness of their products, a group of OLED lighting manufacturers differentiate themselves, showing multiple values of OLED with their innovations.

So far, Photonics West 2018 is the largest-scale photonics exhibition in the United States and its visitors are the most centralized. As an international photonics industry event, Photonics West is annually held in San Francisco. Not a few smart phone manufacturers have been developing 3D sensing embedded devices since Apple launched iPhone X featured with 3D sensing function. Thus, 3D sensing application market and VCSEL product development became the focus of attention in Photonics West 2018.

The international photonics exhibition Photonics West 2018 is now the largest one in the US and has a lot of visitors.
