Micro LED displays require the use of red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs, achieved by mixing nitride LEDs and phosphide LEDs. This mixing causes blue, green and red LEDs to behave differently in terms of temperature and aging, which impacts the quality of image color. Moreover, blue, green and red LEDs each require specific electronic drivers, making integration more complex. (Figure 1: Red emission at 630nm of 100µmx100µm of full InGaN LED grown on Soitec’s InGaNOS) RGB LEDs composed of the same material inducing the same behav...

The human body reacts to sunlight and darkness by releasing hormones that direct our internal clock, known as our circadian system. Disturbing our internal clock can affect our ability to perform or concentrate and literally puts us at risk for a host of diseases. Recent research indicates that building occupants’ circadian rhythm can be disturbed when they spend long hours indoors without access to the Earth’s natural lighting cycle.

Organic semiconductor materials are already being employed today in solar cells and organic LEDs (OLEDs) amongst others. Until now, however, little was known about how the doping molecules are integrated into the chemical structure of organic semiconductors. The Molecular Systems Joint Research Team of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin at BESSY II have now analysed this with surprising results. The molecules are not necessarily uniformly dispersed in the host lattice, as it is usual with inorganic semiconductors, but instead form what are known as co-crystallites.

All of us have, at some point or another, complained about the use of lumens as a metric – for a variety of reasons. First, lumens are not very accurate as a proxy for perceived brightness. Second, there is a temptation to increase lumens by ‘cheating’, for instance on the chromaticity of a lamp – ponder this next time you are subjected to a depressingly greenish fluorescent lamp! Third, the lumen race pushes the industry to compromise on competing aspects, especially color rendition. If two LEDs emit the same number of optical watts, but one generates more long-wavelength photons to properly render deep-red tones, it is by definition penalized in terms of lumens.
