Merck: Quantum Dot Unlikely to Replace OLED in Display Industry

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) will be the game changer in the TV and display industry over the long-term while quantum dot (QD) technology will not have a powerful impact, a report from The Korean Herald cited Korea CEO Michael Grund saying.

“The OLED is at the beginning of its journey, and has the potential to become a game changer,” said Grund. It is unsure if the company will establish production facilities for the displays. Merck has currently an OLED laboratory running in Korea.

On the contrary, “The QD technology will not be a game changer in the TV market,” said Grund. The CEO says the use of hazardous cadmium critical in QD technology gives rise to safety concerns, and is a major technology development obstacle.

Last month, major OLED TV makers Samsung announced it intends to give up pushing OLED as a replacement of LCD and focuses on UHD TVs using LCD panels augmented by quantum dot technology, while LG continues to pursue OLED technology, applying mass production strategy to bring down the market price by quadrupling OLED panel production in December.
