The streets of Wallingford, America have got a LED makeover lately. The Wallingford installations are part of a Seattle citywide upgrade to LEDs that began this summer. City Light will install 5,000 LED streetlights in residential neighborhoods in 2010 and a total of 40,000 during the next five years. According to a Rapid City traffic engineer John Less in America, since changing over to LED traffic lights three years ago, the city has achieved positive results, so it's going to make a pilot program on LED street lights. The city is using a $49,000 federal grant to replace street lights on Main and St. Joseph streets with two different bulbs to see which one produces the best results. Main Street will get LED street light fixtures while Saint Joseph will get induction fixtures similar to fluorescent bulbs.

GE released a good news that scientists from GE Global Research, the technology development arm for the General Electric Company, GE Lighting, and the University of Maryland-as part of a two-year solid-state lighting program with the U.S. Department of Energy had successfully demonstrated a 1,500-lumen LED bulb (a standard 100-watt halogen PAR38 bulb produces 1,500 lumens) that addresses key barriers to more widespread adoption of LED bulbs for general lighting.

Verbatim LED lighting, sometimes known as solid state lighting, will be available in wholesale and retail outlets throughout Australia in early 2011. Initially, Verbatim plans to sell lamps focused on the domestic lighting market with the most common shapes and base fittings including A-lamps, candle lamps and directional MR16s, with E14, E27, GU5.3 and GU10 bases. The products will be suitable for direct replacement of incandescent and halogen and compact fluorescent lamps.
