Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the world's biggest TV brand by revenue, said it sold 2.6 million TVs using LED backlight units in 2009, outperforming its earlier target. The company also confirmed an LED-backlight TV sales target for this year of 10 million units.

Green LED Technology Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Hi Score Corporation announced today that it has been invited by the City of Coral Springs, Florida to bid on the supply and application of LED Street Lights. Hi Score Corporation announced today that it has achieved a new milestone by extending its distribution agreement with Consolidated Electrical Distributors. The distribution was initiated in early 2009, providing Consolidated Electrical with the exclusive right to distribute the American Made Energy Saving Street Lights. Hi-Score Corporation announced the completion of the company's re-organization and acquisition of Green LED Solutions by its wholly owned subsidiary Green LED Technology. According to the acquisition agreement, Green LED Solutions is now merged with Green LED Technology, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hi Score Corp. Shuen Der Industry Co., Ltd. (SDI ), a Taiwanese supplier of LED lead frames for automotives and consumer electronics, has invested NT$80 million (US$2.46 million at US$1: NT$32.5) to expand output of the products.

Recently, BenQ has announced a couple of 16:9 LCD monitors that feature LED backlighting, the 21.5-inch V2210 and the 24-inch V2410 in Japan. Both new displays have a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a 5ms response time, a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 250 cd/m2 brightness, the Senseye image enhancement technology, plus DVI and HDMI outputs. Yesterday, Rambus announced that it has acquired technology and patents related to LCDs and optoelectronics from Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) for US$26 million.

Samsung, South Korea’s largest PC maker, is preparing an onslaught of new product in the new year, with tablet PCs, more 3D and all monitors LED backlit by the end of 2010. Samsung will have those products in the future or coming into 2010. Samsung is also planning multitouch monitors and notebooks, as well as more 3D. The touchscreen monitors will likely be CCFL backlit to start, but later will be LED backlit.
