Opening ceremony at Asia’s First LED Chip Production Plant, OSRAM strengthens its position in LED arena

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors today held an opening ceremony for its 35,000 square meter new LED wafer fabrication plant in Penang, Malaysia. It is the company’s first ever LED chip plant in Asia and currently the most modern facility in the world. The plant will produce chips for light emitting diodes, the light source of the future. Y.B. Veeco MOCVD Tools Selected for Continued Capacity Expansion at Seoul Optodevice of Korea

Veeco Instruments Inc., announced today that Seoul Optodevice Co., Ltd. (SOC) of Korea has selected Veeco's TurboDisc(R) K465i(TM) gallium nitride (GaN) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) System to expand their manufacturing capacity of high brightness light emitting diodes (HB-LEDs). In addition to orders placed in 2009, SOC placed a multi-tool order during the second quarter of 2010, with all tools currently scheduled for shipment during 2010.

Genesis Photonics in Taiwan Orders Multiple Veeco MOCVD Systems

Veeco Instruments Inc., announced today that it has received orders for multiple TurboDisc(R) K465i(TM) gallium nitride (GaN) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Systems from Genesis Photonics Inc. (GPI), headquartered in Taiwan, during the first quarter of 2010. GPI will use the systems to increase capacity for the production of high brightness light emitting diodes (HB LEDs) being driven by applications such as backlighting, lighting, displays, and automotive applications.

Sanan Optoelectronics Selects Veeco's MOCVD Tools for Its New LED Fab

Veeco Instruments Inc., announced today that Sanan Optoelectronics Co. Ltd., the largest manufacturer of full color LEDs in China, has placed a large multi-tool order for Veeco's K465i(TM) and E475(TM) TurboDisc(R) Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Systems. The equipment is for Sanan's new LED fab in Wuhu, Anhui Province for the manufacturing of high brightness light emitting diodes (HB LEDs). Veeco booked the order earlier this month.

AUO Says Lower Number of LEDs Needed for TV Applications by the end of 2010

AU Optronics of Taiwan says that the number of LEDs used in TV Backlight Unit will be lowered by about 30% by the end of 2010. One reason that the company cites is that at the beginning of 2011 1-bar edge-type LED BLUs will start to be applied to TV applications.

DOE Launches National Collaboration on LED Street Lights

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that Seattle City Light, Seattle's publicly owned power utility, has been selected to lead a national effort to guide municipalities in evaluating light emitting diode (LED) street lights. The Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium will collect, analyze, and share information and lessons learned about LED street-lighting demonstrations to facilitate the adoption of this energy efficiency technology.
